PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State scored runs in bunches, posting a 12-4 victory over South Dakota State in college baseball action Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars upped their record to 7-11, while SDSU fell to 4-13 overall.
SDSU drew first blood, putting together a two-out rally in the top of the first inning. Jesse Sawyer doubled to center field and scored on Tony Martin's base hit up the middle.
Washington State grabbed the lead with three runs in the home half of the first. Greg Lagreid's base hit with the bases loaded scored two runs and the final run of the inning scored on a sacrifice fly.
The Jackrabbits pulled back to within a run in the third as Billy Stitz doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a base hit by Joel Blake.
WSU then scored eight consecutive runs against Jackrabbit starter Mike Robinson, tallying two runs in the third and three runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings. Derek Jones with a two run home run in the third inning and Alex Burg plated two runs with a triple in the fourth.
SDSU's final two runs of the game, in the seventh inning, were unearned as Beau Hanowski scored on a error and Stitz scampered home on a passed ball.
Jared Prince earned the victory for Washington State after scattering six hits with a strikeout in six innings.
Sam Pieczynski pitched the final 3 2/3 innings for SDSU, striking out four and walking two.
WSU held a 13-8 advantage in hits.Scott Hood and John Lee each had two hits for the Jackrabbits.
The two teams will close out their three-game series Sunday afternoon.
