South Dakota State played the earliest softball home opener in school history on a chilly Friday afternoon at Jackrabbit Softball Stadium, but came out cold in a 1-0 loss to Southern Utah.
Even with temps hovering around the freezing mark, Southern Utah's Kristina Brooks managed to stay hot, and gave up just one infield hit in the win, which improves the Thunderbirds to 12-16 overall, 4-3 in The Summit League, while the Jackrabbits fall to 6-23 overall and 3-1 in league play.
Brooks finished the game with one hit, nine strikeouts and two walks and improved to 11-17 with the win.
A muddy warning track forced SDSU officials to put a temporary fence in front of the warning track, and it worked in favor of the T-Birds, as the lone run game came in the top of the third, when Aly Daniels hit a one-out homerun over the temporary fence in centerfield to put SUU up 1-0.
Brooks took care of the rest, as the Jacks lone hit came in the bottom of the sixth, when Brooke Postma legged out an infield single to break-up the no-hitter.
The Jacks got another base runner in the seventh, when Stacey Evans drew a one-out walk, but Brooks sat down the next two batters in order to seal the Southern Utah win.
Jenna Marston pitched well in going the distance for the Jacks, scattering five hits and adding three strikeouts and five walks in taking the loss, which drops her to 2-14 on the season.
The Jacks and T-Birds return to action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Jackrabbit Softball Stadium starting at 1 p.m.
