The South Dakota State University baseball team continued its offensive outburst in the opening game of a doubleheader, but North Dakota State won a pitchers' duel in the nitecap as the two teams split a Summit League twinbill Saturday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.
The Jackrabbits won the opener, 13-3, rapping out 15 hits. NDSU took Game 2, 1-0, behind a complete game from John Straka. SDSU moved to 7-23 overall, 3-7 in The Summit League. The Bison moved to 10-18 overall, 4-7 in league play.
In the opener, NDSU got on the board first with a run in the second inning.
Kyle Harrison led off the inning with a triple and scored on an RBI groundout from Zach Heidmann.
From there, it was all Jackrabbits. SDSU scored twice in the home half of the second on a sacrifice fly by
Billy Stitz and two-out single by
Beau Hanowski.
The Jackrabbits pulled away to an 11-0 lead with five runs in the third inning and four more in the fourth. The first run of the third inning scored on an error, while Stitz and Hanowski delivered run scoring singles. The other two runs in the third inning scored on a sacrifice fly by
Eric Cain and squeeze bunt by
Scott Hood.
In the fourth inning,
Jesse Sawyer doubled in the first run and
Tony Martin followed with a two-run single. Martin later scored on a double to right field by Cain.
After NDSU scored a pair of unearned runs in the eighth inning, the Jackrabbits answered with two of their own. Stitz delivered his second sacrifice fly of the game and Hanowski plated the final run with his fourth single of the game.
A freshman from Little Falls, Minn., Hanowski was 4-for-5 with three runs batted in. Martin finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. Sawyer and Cain each posted two hits.
Jackrabbit starter
Isaac Johnson pitched the first six innings, striking out two and walking one. The senior right-hander surrendered only four hits as he evened his record at 1-1 on the year.
For the Bison, starter Mark Ries lasted only three-plus innings, giving up 11 earned runs on 10 hits and four walks. Glenn Parker allowed the final two runs over five innings.
Justin Kline and Kenny Beese each tallied two hits for NDSU.
In the nitecap, Straka silenced the Jackrabbit bats, giving up only a pair of singles while striking out seven in the 1-0 seven-inning NDSU victory.
The Bison pushed across a run in the top of the third inning as Anthony Fontana singled with one out, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on Tim Jallen's two-out single to center field.
SDSU left the bases loaded in the second inning and put two runners on in the seventh before Straka recorded the final out. At one stretch, Straka retired 13 consecutive Jackrabbit batters.
Jackrabbit hurler
Layne Somsen was nearly equal to the task, allowing only four hits in a complete-game effort. The freshman from Yankton walked four and struck out four in his best outing of the season.
The two teams are scheduled to wrap up the four-game series Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
