South Dakota State lost the opening game of a baseball doubleheader to University of North Dakota, but held on for a victory in the nitecap to earn a split Monday afternoon at windy Erv Huether Field.
UND won the opener 12-5, while the Jackrabbits answered with a 10-8 victory in Game 2. Both teams won their eighth game of the season; SDSU is 8-25 overall, UND is 8-21.
In the opener, Aaron Cook homered twice and David Lind pitched a complete game to pace UND.
SDSU took an early 2-0 lead as
Jesse Sawyer hit a two-run home run to center field in the bottom of the first inning.
UND scored a run in the top of the second on an RBI single by Jabby Bakhit and tied the game at 2-all on a run-scoring single by Andrew Marek in the third.
The Jackrabbits regained the lead in the bottom of the second as
John Lee scored on a groundout off the bat of
Stephen Turner.
UND pulled into the lead at 5-3, scoring three times in the fourth inning. Josh Lagein's two run single capped the rally.
Beau Hanowski delivered a two-run single for SDSU in the bottom of the fourth inning to knot the game at 5-all, but UND scored the final seven runs of the game. Cook gave UND the lead for good with a three-run homer off Jackrabbit reliever
Blaine Alberta in the top of the fifth and added a two-run shot off
Matt Spinar in the sixth. Andrew Sadler added a solo shot in the seventh to provide the final margin.
Sadler was 4-for-5 with three runs scored, while Cook finished the game 3-for-5 with five runs batted in and three runs scored. UND out-hit the Jackrabbits, 17-8.
John Lee led SDSU with two hits.
Lind scattered eight hits, walked one and struck out only one in earning his first victory of the season.
Alberta took the loss for the Jackrabbits in his two-inning relief stint. He gave up five runs ? four earned ? on six hits. He also struck out two batters. SDSU starter
Mike Robinson worked three-plus innings, allowing three runs and six hits, while striking out two and walking one.
In the nitecap, Jackrabbit starter
Sam Pieczynski pitched 6 1/3 strong innings, while Lee and Sawyer each homered in SDSU's 10-8 victory.
The Jackrabbits never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 4-0 lead through three innings. Lee put SDSU on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run ? his second of the season ? and
Zach Briggs delivered a two-run single in the second. Lee led off the third inning with a triple and later scored on a wild pitch.
UND came back to tie the game with a four-run fourth inning, during which it sent 10 batters to the plate. Sadler, who was 6-for-9 in the doubleheader, drove in the first two runs with a two-out double, while Jake Magner and Andrew Marek followed with run-scoring singles.
SDSU countered with five unearned runs on only one hit in the home half of the fourth. After
Zach Briggs reached on an error with one out,
Jesse Ayala and Lee walked to load the bases. After
Jesse Sawyer was hit by a pitch to plate the first run of the frame,
Tony Martin cleared the bases with a triple to center field and later scored on a wild pitch.
Sawyer capped the Jackrabbit scoring in the sixth inning with an opposite-field solo home run to right field, his second round-tripper of the day and team-leading sixth of the season.
UND put together another four-run rally in the top of the seventh. Pieczynski gave up a two-run double to Lagein with one out in the inning before giving way to
Trever Vermeulen. A sophomore, Vermeulen walked the first batter he faced and gave up a pair of run-scoring singles before getting Cook to foul out to third base to end the game.
Pieczynski struck out two and walked two in the longest appearance of his Jackrabbit career. He evened his record at 2-2 despite giving up 15 hits.
UND held a 17-11 advantage in hits, but stranded 13 runners in the game. Magner was 4-for-5, while Andrew Gudmundson was 3-for-5. Four other players had two hits apiece for UND.
Billy Stitz was 3-for-4 to lead SDSU at the plate. Lee and Turner each tallied two hits.
Scott Eul was saddled with the loss for UND despite not giving up an earned run in his 1 1/3 innings of work.
The two teams are scheduled to play another doubleheader Wednesday in Grand Forks. Start time is set for 1 p.m.
