SHREVEPORT, La. ? Centenary jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and went on to post a 10-1 victory over South Dakota State in the Summit League opener for both teams Friday night at Shehee Stadium.
The Gents improved to 18-4 overall, while SDSU dropped to 4-15 on the season.
Centenary took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Jomar Tabor led off the game with a base hit against SDSU starter Layne Somsen and came around to score on a Travis Leverson single up the middle. Leverson later scored on the back end of a double steal.
The Gents broke open the game with a five-run third inning off reliever Austin Busse. Clifford Shepard tripled in the first run of the frame and later scored on a sacrifice fly. Ricky Imperiali later delivered a two-run double and Leverson followed with another run-scoring single.
Leverson led Centenary's 12-hit attack with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate. Three other Gents had two hits apiece.
Despite being limited to four hits, the Jackrabbits put runners on base in all but two innings. However, SDSU couldn't take advantage of six walks and three batters as the Jackrabbits stranded 12 baserunners in the nine-inning contest, compared to 10 by Centenary.
The lone Jackrabbit run came in the fifth inning without the benefit of a hit. After Billy Stitz reached on a fielder's choice, Joel Blake walked and Tony Martin was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Stephen Turner then drew a walk to score Stitz.
Centenary starter Justin Kraft improved to 4-1, striking out four and walking five in six innings. Derek Dalzell earned his first save of the season after pitching three hitless innings. He struck out three and walked one.
The two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday, starting at 2 p.m.
