CEDAR CITY, Utah ? The South Dakota State women's track and field team broke four school records en route to a third-place finish at The Summit League Outdoor Championships Saturday.
North Dakota State finished in first with 208.5 points while Southern Utah was second with 185. SDSU came in third with 136.5 points and Oral Roberts and Western Illinois rounded out the top five with 96 and 95 points, respectively.
Heather Wollman led the way for the Jacks, breaking two school records in both the 4x100-meter relay and the open 400. The relay team of Tamiko Kopfmann, Brittany Garner, Megan Lauseng and Wollman finished in second and had a time of 46.36 seconds, breaking the 2008 record set by Garner, Wollman, Kristin Barrios and Cameryn Christion.
Wollman then went on to break her own school record and place second in the 400 with a time of 54.19, breaking the old record of 55.07, which she set earlier this year. She also placed first in the open 200 with a time of 24.26, the second fastest time in SDSU history. She now qualifies for both events at the NCAA Midwest regional by surpassing the regional qualifying time in the 400 and winning the 200.
After breaking a school record yesterday, Sara Ackman responded by breaking another one today, this time in the discus. She set the record with a toss of 172 feet 10 inches, breaking her old mark of 171-03, which was set earlier this season.
Stacy Huss also improved on her school-record in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.31. Her third place performance broke her old record of 1:01.44, which was set earlier this season. ?
MEN:
CEDAR CITY, Utah ? The SDSU men were led by a pair of second-place performances, Saturday, leading them to a fourth-place finish at The Summit League Outdoor Championships.
Leading going into the final event, the Jacks were overtaken by Western Illinois and finished with 99 points to WIU's third-place finish 101. Southern Utah finished in the top spot with 220 points while NDSU finished second with points with 202.
Tyler Schiferl tied the leader in the pole vault with a jump of 15-7, but took second place due to more misses at lower heights. Ben Jasinski also turned in a second place performance in the triple jump with a leap of 50-1.25.
Jake Brinkman placed third in the discus with a mark of 162-1 while Luke Leischner was also third in the open 400 with a time of 48.52.
After sitting in second after the 110-meter hurdle prelims yesterday, Nick Schanaman placed third with a time of 14.45.
The Jacks return to action at the NCAA Midwest Regional in Norman Okla., May 29 and 30. The Five men and four women who met regional standards or placed first The Summit League Championships will compete.
