South Dakota State University Director of Athletics Justin Sell announced Monday that
Ritchie Price will return as head baseball coach next season.
“Ritchie did a great job last season with a tough schedule and under some difficult circumstances,” Sell said. “This decision is in the best interest of our student-athletes. I'm really excited about working with him and look forward to watching our baseball program continue to grow.”
As interim head coach during the recently completed 2009 season, Price directed the Jackrabbits through a dramatic mid-season turnaround in which they finished with a 26-30 overall record and reached the championship of the Summit League postseason tournament. After posting a 5-22 record during the first half of the season, SDSU ended the regular season by winning 19 of its last 25 games and earned the third seed in the Summit League Championship with a 17-10 mark in league play.
“I am excited for the opportunity to continue to build on what our program accomplished last season and to keep coaching the great student-athletes we have here at South Dakota State,” Price said. “Having met and talked with Justin Sell, this is a very exciting time for the department as we continue to move forward from the transition into Division I. I believe our program will only improve upon last year's conference championship appearance and really like the direction and possibilities for SDSU baseball in the future.”
Price first joined the Jackrabbit baseball coaching staff in the fall of 2007 as a graduate assistant. He served as the team's third-base and infield coach during the 2008 season before being named interim head coach in June 2008, following the resignation of
Reggie Christiansen.
A native of San Luis Obispo, Calif., Price comes from a baseball family. He played for his father, Ritch, at the University of Kansas, setting Jayhawk career records for games played (255), at bats (1,022), hits (312), runs scored (204), sacrifices (35) and hit by pitches (53). Following his successful career with the Jayhawks, Price was an 18th round draft pick of the New York Mets in the 2006 Major League Baseball first-year player draft.
