Jacks maul Marauders to wrap up non-conference schedule

The South Dakota State women's soccer team put an exclamation point on the non-conference season finale, as they defeated the Mary Marauders 4-0 on a beautiful night at Fishback Soccer Park in front of 347 fans.

It didn't take long for the Jacks to find the back of the net as they scored in the 48^th second of the game. Kayla Braffet, who set a career high in points with four (2-2=4), fed Kaitlin Justice from the end line for a goal from point-blank range, making the score 1-0. The goal was Justice's third of the season and just missed being the fastest goal in school history by three seconds, set by Jennifer Briggs in 2002.

Braffet would again make her presence known as she dribbled around her defender and beat the outstretched goalkeeper top shelf in the 48th minute for her second goal of the season, extending the lead to 2-0 just after the half.

SDSU didn't let up as the Jacks scored two, two-assist goals to finish the game. Kelsey Ferguson and Braffet set up Christa Nyblom for her second goal of the season, pushing the lead to 3-0.

Ferguson, who scored her first goal of the seaosn and also set a career high in points with three (1-1=3), ended the scoring in the 90^th minute with a goal on the great setup from Brittany Sipp and Kourtney Frank, ending the scoring at 4-0.

"It was great to get a win and score some much needed goals," said head coach Lang Wedemeyer. "Our attack has been pretty good but has been missing that finishing touch. It was nice in the second half to score some quality goals and get some of the girls on a roll heading into conference play. Mary is a quality team and we hope this propells us into conference play, starting with our trip to Centenary and Oral Roberts."

The Jacks improve to 3-4-2 on the season, while the Division II Mary Marauders fall to 2-3-2.

Brie Rogers notched her second shutout of the season making three saves, including a diving save to preserve the shutout in the in the 57^th minute. Rogers ups her record to 2-3-1 on the season. Mary goalkeeper Ashley Akers took the loss, allowing four goals while making 10 saves.

The Jacks dominated the flow of the game as they outshot Mary 24-4, including 15-3 in shots on-goal. The Jacks also held the advantage in corner kicks, 7-2.

SDSU resumes their schedule with conference play as they travel to Shreveport, La. for a 7 p.m. match against Centenary.
