GRAND FORKS, N.D. – An 84th minute goal by
Katelyn Beulke, and a stellar defensive effort, propelled South Dakota State to a 1-0 victory at Bronson Field in Summit League women's soccer on Thursday.
The Jackrabbits and Fighting Hawks competed in a back-and-forth affair through the opening 45 minutes. The two sides combined for just four shots in the period, with SDSU's
Adrianne Agbayani producing the lone shot on goal in the 25th minute.
North Dakota, needing a win to keep its hopes alive for a berth in the upcoming Summit League Championship tournament, began to push for attacking opportunities in the second half. That effort allowed for SDSU to increase its scoring chances as well as the Jackrabbits eventually outshot the Fighting Hawks by a 9-3 margin in the final 45 minutes.
South Dakota State goalkeeper
Mallorie Benhart made her lone save of the match in the 65th minute.
The next 18 minutes of action remained scoreless before the Jacks had a breakthrough. SDSU's possessed the ball down the right side of the field and sent a cross into the box. A North Dakota defender stepped in front of the pass and attempted to clear the ball out of danger, but Beulke stood in the way. Her shot from in front of the penalty mark easily found the back of the net as the Jackrabbits tallied the lone goal of the game.
South Dakota State never allowed North Dakota to threaten in the final six minutes of regulation as the Jackrabbits sealed the road victory.
South Dakota State improved to 10-4-3 overall (5-2-2 Summit League) in the win. North Dakota is now 5-9-2 overall (2-6-1).
Beulke scored her fifth goal of the season. That output is second most on the team, while her 14 points are tied for second with teammate
Mia Bosch.
SDSU outshot North Dakota by a 12-4 margin and didn't allow a UND corner kick opportunity in the entire match. Beulke had a team-high four shots for SDSU and was followed by Bosch (2) and Agbayani (2). The Jackrabbits had a strong defensive performance on Thursday.
Taryn Hettich and
Jenna Maloy each played the full 90 minutes. Defenders
Gentry Williams and
Sophia Emerson competed for over 80 minutes. Agbayani, alongside Finnegan and
MaKynlie Cade, each played a reserve-high 47 minutes.
