Four South Dakota State grapplers picked-up wins over Air Force in Western Wrestling Conference action on Saturday at Frost Arena in Brookings, but a pair of major decisions and a forfeit went against the Jackrabbits in a 23-12 loss to the Falcons.
The loss drops the Jacks to 1-8-1 overall and 0-2 in the WWC, while Air Force improves to 5-6 overall, 1-1 in conference duals.
Aaron Pickrel got the Jackrabbits off to a good start with a 5-4 decision at 125 pounds, and then after a pair of major decisions against the Jacks, Nick Hagar at 149 pounds and Nick Flynn at 157 pounds posted back-to-back wins to get the Jacks back in front at 9-8.
Down 0-2 early, Hagar used an escape and a reversal to get the lead and then held got a takedown with eight seconds left in the match to secure the 7-5 decision.
Flynn entered the third period of his match tied at four, but got a takedown with 1:39 left to take a 6-4 lead and even though his opponent escaped seven seconds later, he held on for a 7-5 decision thanks to riding time.
Air Force regained the lead with a win at 165 pounds and put the match out of reach with a forfeit at 174 pounds.
The only other Jackrabbit win came at 197 pounds, when Tyler Sorenson blanked Neil Delaney 5-0 for the Jacks final three points.
The Jackrabbits return home for their final home dual of the season on Friday, when they host Wyoming in Western Wrestling Conference action in Frost Arena at 7 p.m.
