Wrestlers close calendar year on the road

The South Dakota State wrestlers head to the 48th annual Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill. Wednesday and Thursday. The two-day event, hosted by no. 9 (Intermat) Northwestern, featured 11 top-25 ranked teams last season and this year's competition should be just as impressive.
The lineup for the Jackrabbits includes Aaron Pickrel (125 pounds), Dustin Walraven (141 pounds), Nick Flynn (157 pounds), Scott Elliott (174 pounds) and Kevin Kelly (Hwt).

Last Week - The Jackrabbits competed in the Reno Tournament of Champions Dec. 19, finishing with a 25-place finish as a team.
Aaron Pickrel went 4-2 at the RTOC. He won his first match 9-0 before falling 5-1 into the wrestlback bracket. He defeated his next three oppenents, outscoring them 20-8. The 125-pounder fell to Shane Young of West Virginia 6-4 to end his run in the tournament. Pickrel improved to 18-7 on the season.
Andrew Youngblom, competing unattached in the 149-pound bracket, lost his first match by fall in six minutes 13 seconds, but won his next three matches in the wrestleback bracket, including two by fall. Youngblom ended his run in the wrestlebacks with a major decision loss to Savva Kostis of no. 55 Appalachian State. Youngblom stands at 7-10 on the season.
Jackrabbit Triangular Recap - The Jacks hosted the Jackrabbit Triangular endowment match Dec. 12 with 100 percent of the event's ticket sales, totaling $3,500, directly benefiting the Jackrabbit Wrestling Endowment. SDSU faced Northern State in the first dual of the day with the Jacks winning five of the duals matches, including David Michaud's win by fall over Chad Gibson in three minutes 28 seconds. The Jacks tied the Wolves 19-19 pushing the all-time record against NSU to 28-1-1.
The Jacks also went head-to-head with Southern Illinois-Edwardsville at the Triangular but dropped the match 18-12. Aaron Pickrel, Jimmy Hamilton and David Michaud each picked up decision wins over the Cougars.
Next Up - The wrestlers return to Frost Arena Jan. 15 when they host Northern Iowa at 7 p.m.
