MURRAY, Ky. — The South Dakota State University bullpen allowed only one run over seven innings and Billy Stitz went 3-for-5 with three runs scored to pace the Jackrabbit offense in an 8-3 victory over Murray State Saturday afternoon.
The Jackrabbits evened their record at 1-1, while Murray State dropped to 4-1. The two teams are scheduled to play the decisive game of their three-game series at noon Sunday.
Murray State scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning against Jackrabbit starter Layne Somsen. Jonathan Craycraft walked to lead off the frame and Colton Moore followed with a base hit. With two outs, Drew Pixley hit a ball that was booted at first base, allowing both Craycraft and Moore to score.
SDSU came right back to take the lead with a three-run third inning. With two outs, Stitz started the rally with a bunt single and scored all the way from first base on a single to left center by Jeff Fish. Joel Blake singled and Jesse Sawyer was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Zach Briggs then delivered a single to right center to plate both Fish and Blake.
From there, the Jackrabbit bullpen took control. Freshman left-hander Shane Kraemer entered the game in the bottom of the third inning and pitched three scoreless frames. Trever Vermeulen pitched a scoreless sixth inning and Sam Pieczynski worked the final three innings for the save. Both Kraemer, who was credited with the victory, and Vermeulen struck out two batters.
Meanwhile, the SDSU offense wasn't finished for the day. SDSU tacked on a run in the seventh as Stitz greeted reliever Matt McGaha with a triple and later scored on a groundout off the bat of Fish.
The Jackrabbits put the game out of reach with a four-run ninth innings. Stitz again started the rally with a one-out double and scored on a base hit by John Lee. After an error and intentional walk loaded the bases, Briggs was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Redshirt freshman Daniel Telford drove in the final two runs with a two-out single to left field.
The Thoroughbreds got a run back in the bottom of the ninth on a leadoff home run by Wes Cunningham, who was 4-for-5 to lead Murray State's 11-hit attack. Moore added a 3-for-4 effort at the plate.
SDSU notched nine hits, including two by Blake.
Murray State starter Jake Donze took the loss despite striking out 10 Jackrabbit batters in six innings. McGaha added five strikeouts.
