LINCOLN, Neb. - D.J. Belfonte homered twice and Josh Scheffert hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to lead Nebraska past South Dakota State, 12-6, in baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Hawks Field.
The Cornhuskers moved to 8-7 on the season, while SDSU dropped to 8-5 overall.
Nebraska scored four first-inning runs before Jackrabbit starter Shane Kraemer recorded an out. Belfonte was hit by a pitch and later scored on Adam Bailey's single to right center field. Scheffert followed with his three-run blast to left center to make the score 4-0.
Belfonte hit a solo home run in the second inning before the Jackrabbits cracked the scoring column with a two-run fifth inning. Eric Cain plated Zach Rhodes with the first run of the frame, with Scott Hood delivering a run-scoring single with two outs to drive in John Lee.
The Cornhuskers put the game out reach with a six-run home half of the fifth inning, sending 11 batters to the plate. Belfonte, who was 3-for-4 and drove in three runs, contributed a run-scoring single in the Nebraska outburst. Scheffert added his fourth RBI of the game with a base hit in the inning, as well.
SDSU scored again in the seventh inning on a run-scoring single by Joel Blake, and Blake added a two-run double in a three-run eighth inning.
Belfonte closed the scoring for Nebraska with his second solo home run of the game to lead off the bottom of the seventh.
The Jackrabbits out-hit Nebraska, 15-14, as Blake and Lee each went 4-for-5. Two of Blake's hits were doubles as he upped his team-leading total to 10. Billy Stitz and Scott Hood also tallied two hits each for the Jackrabbits.
Sean Yost pitched 4 1/3 innings to pick up the victory for Nebraska. He gave up two runs on five hits while striking out two.
SDSU returns to action with a four-game series Friday through Sunday at Northern Colorado. First pitch Friday is set for 2 p.m. Mountain Time in Greeley, Colo.
