Jacks sweep twinbill with big ninth innings

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. -- The South Dakota State University baseball team notched a pair of big ninth innings to sweep a non-conference doubleheader over Air Force by scores of 14-7 and 11-7 Saturday afternoon.
The Jackrabbits struck for five ninth-inning runs in the opener and broke a 7-all tie in Game 2 with a four-run frame. SDSU improved to 4-2 overall, while the Falcons dropped to 3-8.
SDSU reliever Trever Vermeulen was credited with the victory in both games. The junior right-hander from Mitchell struck out four batters in 2 2/3 innings in the opener, then added three K's in three innings in the nitecap.
The Jackrabbits got the bats going early in the opener, scoring four times in the first inning. Joel Blake drove in the first two runs with a double, with the other two runs scoring on groundouts.
Air Force tied the game at 7-all in the sixth inning, but SDSU regained the lead in the eight on a run-scoring double by John Lee and run-scoring single by Zach Briggs. Zach Rhodes delivered the big blow in the five-run ninth inning with a three-run double down the right-field line.
The Jackrabbits tallied 21 hits in the game, including three each by Beau Hanowski, Jesse Sawyer, Scott Hood and Rhodes.
Matt Alexander homered twice to lead Air Force at the plate. Addison Gentry added a solo shot immediately following Alexander's second roundtripper of the game.
In Game 2, the Jackrabbits again struck for four early runs, capped by a three-run homer by Rhodes. Sawyer hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning, with Rhodes giving the Jackrabbits the lead in the ninth with his second home run of the game, a solo shot to center field with one out. Daniel Telford added a two-run homer later in the inning and Billy Stitz singled in the final run of the game.
Alex Oberlee pitched a scoreless ninth to seal the victory.
John Lee also homered for the Jackrabbbits and was one of six different SDSU players to record two hits.
