DALLAS, Texas - Dallas Baptist hit five home runs, including two by Jason Krizan, to defeat South Dakota State, 12-9, in college baseball action Friday night.
The Patriots, a Division I independent and NCAA regional qualifier last season, improved to 15-11 in 2010. SDSU, which dropped its second consecutive game, fell to 11-8.
Early on it appeared as though the game would be even more of a slugfest as the Jackrabbits raced out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning, sending 11 batters to the plate. John Lee plated the first two runs with a single to right field. Eric Cain delivered a run-scoring double and Dallas native Zach Briggs knocked in a run with a single to left field. The final run of the inning scored when Billy Stitz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Dallas Baptist answered with five runs of its own in the home half of the first inning, connecting on three home runs against SDSU starter Jared Koch. Krizan hit a two-run home run to center field to open the scoring and Ryan Enos followed with a solo shot to center. Two batters late, Duncan McAlpine added a two-run shot to knot the game at 5-all.
Joel Blake accounted for the lone home run of the evening for the Jackrabbits, his third of the season, to lead off the second inning. Briggs added a run-scoring single later in the inning to put SDSU ahead 7-5.
The Patriots grabbed the lead for good with a four-run second inning, highlighted by a three-run home run by Krizan. He later added a pair of doubles to end the game 4-for-4 with seven runs batted in.
With neither starter making it through the second inning, the bullpens pitched effectively. Jackrabbit reliever Stephen Bougher surrendered a pair of runs in the third inning, the first on a home run by Austin Knight, then held the Patriots to one run the rest of the way. In seven innings, Bougher struck out four and walked two. He also gave up a run in the fifth inning.
Ben Palmer was credited with the victory for DBU after pitching 2 2/3 innings after relieving Ryan Millard. Jared Stafford threw the final five innings, recording six strikeouts and allowing only three hits in recording his second save of the season.
SDSU held a 15-14 advantage in hits, but stranded 12 runners. Briggs and Stitz each collected three hits.
The two teams are scheduled to conclude their three-game series with a doubleheader Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.
