CEDAR CITY, Utah - South Dakota State used a balanced offensive attack to win the opening game of a doubleheader, 13-5, but Southern Utah's Kyle Melling pitched a complete game in the nitecap as the two teams split a Summit League baseball doubleheader Friday afternoon.
The Jackrabbits moved to 22-13 overall and 7-4 in league play with the split. SUU, which won Game 2, 4-2, moved to 12-26 on the season, 5-6 in The Summit League play.
SDSU broke a 3-all tie in Game 1 with a seven-run fifth inning, highlighted by a grand slam by Billy Stitz. Andrew Melton plated the first run of the frame by drawing a bases-loaded walk. John Lee added a run-scoring double and the final run of the inning scored on an RBI groundout.
Trailing 2-0 after the first inning, Lee put the Jackrabbits on the board with his sixth home run of the season, a solo shot to center field to lead off the second inning. SDSU gained a 3-2 lead in the third inning on a two-run single by Joel Blake, before Marcus Romero knotted the game with a leadoff home run in the home half of the third.
The Jackrabbits tacked on a pair of runs in the seventh inning on run-scoring singles by Eric Cain and Zach Briggs. Blake closed out the scoring for SDSU with a solo home run in the eighth.
SUU's final two runs came on Joe Goldenberg's third home run of the series, a two-run blast in the bottom of the eighth.
Blake Treinen remained unbeaten for SDSU, improving to 4-0 with a seven-inning start. The right-hander struck out six, walked four and allowed five hits. Blaine Alberta pitched the final two innings.
Lee led the Jackrabbits' 17-hit attack with a 4-for-6 effort at the plate. Stitz was 3-for-7 with four RBI, while Blake was 3-for-6 with three RBI.
In Game 2, Melling struck out three and did not walk a batter in going the distance for the Thunderbirds in a seven-inning contest.
SDSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Stitz singled and scored on Jesse Sawyer's double to left field.
SUU scored both its second-inning runs on a home run by designated hitter Tyler Hogge, then added single runs in the third and fourth innings on a Goldenberg RBI double and solo home run by Braden Warren, respectively.
The Jackrabbits trimmed the deficit to 4-2 in the fifth on an RBI single by Stitz that scored Andrew Melton, who led off the inning with a triple.
Freshman starter Stephen Bougher fanned six, walked two and allowed nine hits in five innings of work for SDSU as he fell to 1-3 on the season.
SUU held a 10-8 advantage in hits, including two by Bo Cuthbertson, Bucky Aona and Goldenberg. The Jackrabbits received a pair of hits from Stitz and Cain.
The series concludes Saturday with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. Mountain Time (2 p.m. Central).
NOTES: Southern Utah leads the all-time series, 7-6 ... the Jackrabbits played errorless defense in both games ... Stitz upped his season hit total to 64 and career total to 187 ...
