The South Dakota State University baseball team opened the home season Wednesday afternoon with a 12-2 victory over Mount Marty at blustery Erv Huether Field.
The Jackrabbits improved to 13-9 overall behind three hits from freshman Andrew Melton. Mount Marty, a member of the NAIA's Great Plains Athletic Conference, dropped to 20-9 overall.
SDSU took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Daniel Telford hit a bloop double to left field with one out and scored on a base hit to right field by Erik DeJong. After Billy Stitz was hit by a pitch, Beau Hanowski drove in DeJong with an opposite-field single.
The Jackrabbits tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the fourth inning to build their lead to 4-0.
Jackrabbit pitchers Shane Kraemer and Stephen Bougher combined to hold Mount Marty hitless through the first five innings. The Lancers broke through with a run in the sixth against Alex Oberle on back-to-back doubles to left field by Trey Krier and Jason Schmidt.
SDSU broke the game open in the home half of the sixth inning, taking advantage of two Mount Marty errors to score five times. Jesse Sawyer drove in the first two runs of the frame with a triple to right center that scored Hanowski and Joel Blake. Sawyer later scored on a fielding error and two more runs scored on a throwing error later in the inning.
The Lancers got a run back in the seventh inning, but two more errors in the eighth allowed SDSU to end the game early via the 10-run rule. In all, Mount Marty committed five errors, which led to eight unearned runs.
Sawyer ended the game with a single to center field for his third run batted in of the contest.
The Jackrabbits held a 12-5 advantage in hits as Blake, Telford and Sawyer all tallied two hits each. Telford and DeJong both scored three times.
Krier notched two hits for Mount Marty.
Kraemer, who was working on a pre-determined pitch count, struck out five and walked two in 3 1/3 scoreless innings. Blaine Alberta and Jared Koch also saw mound duty for SDSU.
The Jackrabbits are scheduled to open Summit League play at IPFW with a four-game series Friday through Sunday in Fort Wayne, Ind.
