FARGO, N.D. - Zach Rhodes recorded four extra-base hits and freshman Stephen Bougher pitched eight strong innings as South Dakota State opened a four-game Summit League baseball series with an 11-4 victory over North Dakota State Friday night at Newman Outdoor Field.
The Jackrabbits set a Division I-era record with 11 doubles, including three each by Rhodes and Jesse Sawyer, to improve to 31-16 overall and 14-7 in league play. NDSU dropped to 20-25 overall, 9-11 in The Summit League. The Jackrabbits moved into a tie with Oral Roberts for second place in the league standings after ORU lost 11-1 at league-leading Centenary (La.) on Friday.
SDSU never trailed in the contest, taking a 1-0 lead in top of the third inning. Rhodes led off with a double, moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Scott Hood and scored on a base hit by Billy Stitz.
The Bison tied the game in the home half of the third before the Jackrabbits took the lead for good. With two outs, Hood doubled and scored on Stitz's triple to left-center field.
SDSU broke open the game with a six-run top of the sixth. John Lee doubled in the first two runs and Zach Briggs hit a two-run home run two batters later to make the score 6-1. Rhodes then made it back-to-back jacks with a shot to right field to chase Bison reliever Jason Mattila. Daniel Telford doubled in the final run of the inning.
Rhodes' third double of the game came in the seventh inning, when the Jackrabbits scored twice. He later scored on a double by pinch-hitter Jeff Fish.
Bougher made the lead stand up as he notched a career-high strikeouts and walked only one in his longest outing of the season. The right-hander from Papillion, Neb., allowed a two-run single by Zach Wentz in the seventh inning and gave up an unearned run in the eighth before exiting.
Of SDSU's 16 hits in the game, 14 went for extra bases - 11 doubles, one triple and two home runs.
Max Casper was 3-for-4 to lead NDSU's nine-hit attack.
The series resumes Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
