GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Hits were hard to come by for the South Dakota State University baseball team Tuesday afternoon, but the Jackrabbits managed to split a pair of seven-inning games against the University of North Dakota at Kraft Field.
UND won the opener of the doubleheader, 7-1, behind a combined two-hit pitching performance by Travis Clifton and David Spies. SDSU came back to win the nitecap, 2-1, as Andrew Melton and Eric Cain hit solo home runs and Trever Vermeulen recorded his school-record 10th save of the season.
SDSU moved to 34-18 overall, matching the program's record for wins in a season during the Division I era, previously set in 2007 (34-19). UND moved to 16-31 overall.
In the opener, the Jackrabbits took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Cain walked, moved to third on Joel Blake's 30th double of the season and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jesse Sawyer. However, SDSU would manage only one more hit - a fifth-inning single by Billy Stitz - the rest of the way.
UND sent 10 batters to the plate in the fourth inning, scoring six times. Jake Magner led off with a double and later scored on a base hit by Andrew Gudmunson. Josh Nelson's RBI double chased Jackrabbit starter Austin Busse, who took the loss. Ridge Halenar and Jabby Bakhit added run-scoring hits against reliever Stephen Bougher before Craig Dolmage capped the rally with a two-run single. Gudmunson drove in a run with a double in the fifth inning to close out the scoring.
Clifton, who earned his first victory of the season, gave up both Jackrabbit hits, walked five and struck out one in 5 1/3 innings of work. Spies struck out one in pitching 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief.
Dolmage was 3-for-4 to lead UND's 10-hit attack.
In Game 2, UND drew first blood on a solo home run by Jake Magner with two outs in the bottom of the first inning, his 18th round-tripper of the season.
It was the only hit allowed by SDSU starter Shane Kraemer in his four innings of work. The freshman left-hander struck out three, walked one and hit a batter en route to his fourth victory of the season.
SDSU grabbed the lead in the third inning as Melton hit his second home run of the season with one out and Cain followed two batters later with his 13th homer of the year, against UND starter Kevin Auth.
Vermeulen worked around a pair of hits in each of the fifth and seventh innings as he established a new single-season saves record previously set by Gary Olechoski in 2006 and Jacob Kougl in 2007. Vermeulen struck out two and walked one in lowering his nation-leading earned run average to 0.63.
The Jackrabbits won despite being limited to three hits. No player for either team had more than one hit in Game 2.
Auth struck out seven and walked three in 6 2/3 innings for UND.
SDSU returns home to close out Summit League regular season action against Western Illinois. The four-game series will consist of doubleheaders both Friday and Saturday at Erv Huether Field. Action begins at noon each day.
