TULSA, Okla. - Oral Roberts struck for five runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back in claiming its 13th consecutive Summit League Baseball Championship crown with a 12-2 victory over South Dakota State Saturday afternoon at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
ORU improved to 35-25 overall and advances to next week's NCAA Tournament. Pairings will be announced Monday, with play beginning at 16 regional sites Friday.
SDSU ended its season with a 39-21 overall record, tying a single-season school record for victories.
For the second consecutive game against the Jackrabbits, Oral Roberts put up a big number in the first inning. Joey Winiecki led off with a double to the left-field corner and P.J. Sequeira followed with a double to right center. Nick Baligod homered against SDSU starter Stephen Bougher before the Jackrabbits recorded an out and tournament Most Valuable Player Chris Elder made it 5-0 with a two-run round-tripper later in the frame for his third home run of the tournament.
Sequeira doubled in another run in the second inning to chase Bougher from the game. Jackrabbit closer Trever Vermeulen then entered and held ORU in check until the fourth inning, when the Golden Eagles capitalized on an error. Joey Winiecki reached on an error, moved to third on a single by Sequiera after an 11-pitch at-bat and scored on a base hit by Baligod.
ORU struck again for two runs in the top of the fifth as Bennett Pickar dumped a two-run single into right field to up the lead to 9-0.
SDSU cracked the scoring column in the bottom of the fifth on a solo home run by Zach Briggs, his ninth of the season. However, the Golden Eagles answered with two in the sixth. Sequeira led off the inning with his third double of the game and scored on another base hit by Baligod. The final run of the inning scored on an SDSU error.
The Jackrabbits opened the home half of the sixth with three straight singles, but could only score one to pull to within 11-2. Zach Rhodes drew a bases-loaded walk to force in Joel Blake, but Elder threw a strike to the plate on a fly ball by Briggs to cut down a Jackrabbit runner and end the threat.
Golden Eagle starter Jeff Burleson earned the victory after striking out three and walking three in six innings. Dallas Beeler retired the first eight batters he faced en route to a three-inning save.
The first three hitters in the ORU lineup accounted for 10 of the Golden Eagles' 16 hits. Sequeira was 4-for-4, while Baligod was 4-for-5 with five runs batted in. Joey Winiecki added a pair of hits.
Briggs notched two of the Jackrabbits' seven hits.
