South Dakota State fell into an early 15-5 hole just seven minutes into Friday's game with Oakland at Frost Arena, but the Jackrabbit answered with a 16-2 run to take 21-17 lead and never trailed again in a 76-64 win over the Golden Grizzlies.
A pair of Jordan Dykstra three-pointers highlighted the run for the Jackrabbits, who improve to 12-4 overall and remain perfect at 4-0 in Summit League play, as the sophomore scored eight of the 16 points in the run.
The Jackrabbits would push the lead to as many as nine points in the first half, only to see Oakland, who falls to 8-8 overall and 2-2 in league play, cut the deficit to just two points at 34-32 at halftime.
Two Brayden Carlson three-pointers to start the second half put the Jacks up by eight, and Oakland did not get any closer than four points the rest of the game.
"We didn't get off to a very good start," head coach Scott Nagy said, "But Jordan really got us going and Brayden got such a great start in the second half and we were able to keep the lead from there."
Nate Wolters led the balanced Jackrabbit offense with 19 points and added seven assists. Carlson, who scored a career-high 17 in Wednesday's win over IPFW, topped that mark with 18 in the win over Oakland with a 6-for-6 night from the floor, that includes a perfect 4-for-4 mark from long range. Carlson also set a career-high with 40 minutes played and tied a career-mark with five steals.
Dykstra finished with 17 and Tony Fiegen 10 points in the win. Griffan Callahan and Chad White both added six points.
Reggie Hamilton led all scorers with 20 points. Drew Valentine scored 15 and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Corey Petros and Laval Lucas-Perry both scored 12 points in a losing cause.
Now fully entrenched in Summit League play, the Jackrabbits return to the road next week for games at Southern Utah on Thursday at 7 p.m. MT, followed by a game at preseason favorite Oral Roberts on Saturday at 7 p.m.
NOTES: The SDSU win marks the second win in 11 games with Oakland ... the only other win against OU came on Jan. 31, 2009, when the Jackrabbits won 74-68 in overtime ... Wolters 19 points gives him 1,223 for his career, good for 19th all-time at SDSU ... Wolters seven assists in the game puts him in a tie for sixth all-time at SDSU with 363 in his career ... Nagy notched his 301st career win, which ties him with Nancy Neiber (301-140 from 1984-2000) for career-wins by any basketball coach in SDSU history ... coupled with its loss at North Dakota State on Wednesday, Oakland loses back-to-back Summit League games for the first time since Jan. 29 and Jan. 31, 2009
