Jacks avoid tsunami, but drop two in Hawaii

HONOLULU - The South Dakota State softball team got quite a scare from the tsunami warnings issued in Honolulu on Friday, but the high water stayed away and the sun came out long enough for the Jackrabbits to play two games at the Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament.

The Jacks opened the day with an exhibition game against an emotionally charged Tokyo Women's College team, who downed the Jackrabbits 10-7 in eight innings.

"They did a moment of silence and played the Japanese national anthem before the game," head coach Joanna Lane said. "It was very cool, and an excellent learning experience for our team."

SDSU pounded out 11 hits in the game, including a two run homerun from Marlee Petersen in the fifth, but Tokyo scored three runs in the seventh to force extra innings, and four runs in the eighth to secure the win.

The day continued with a match-up against Miami (Ohio), who held the Jackrabbits to just two hits in a 4-0 win.

Ashley Durazo and Krista Honken both went 1-for-3 in the loss, which dropped the Jacks to 2-12 on the season.

The RedHawks plated two runs in the third and two more in the fourth get the win, which gives them a 9-6 record on the season.

Kori Seidlitz took the loss for the Jacks, giving up four runs on eight hits with a trio of walks and no strikeouts over four innings. Pam Nicholson pitched two hitless innings in relief with one strikeout.

The Jacks return to action on Saturday with games against Longwood (Va.) at 1 p.m. and against host Hawaii at 5 p.m. HAT.
