LINCOLN, Neb. - The South Dakota State University baseball team suffered its fourth straight loss Tuesday afternoon, falling 8-3 at Nebraska.
The Cornhuskers improved to 10-6, while the Jackrabbits dropped to 3-9.
Nebraska broke into the scoring column with three runs in the third inning against Jackrabbit starter Kolton Emery. Patric Tolentino opened the inning by reaching on a error and advanced to third on a base hit by Kale Kiser. Tolentino later scored on a base hit by Bryan Peters. Cody Asche and Josh Scheffert then followed with run-scoring hits.
The Huskers pushed the advantage to 4-0 in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Kurt Farmer that scored Chad Christensen.
SDSU trimmed the margin to 4-2 with single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings against the Nebraska bullpen. Beau Hanowski singled and later scored the first Jackrabbit run of the game on a base hit by Zach Rhodes. Eric Cain led off the sixth with a triple and scored on a base hit by Jesse Sawyer.
Two Jackrabbit errors in the sixth inning allowed the Huskers to bat around and hang a four-spot on the scoreboard. Tolentino capped the scoring with a solo home run to left field.
SDSU scored for the third consecutive inning in the seventh on an RBI single by Rhodes, but could get no closer. Rhodes was 2-for-2 with two runs batted in and also drew a pair of walks to lead the Jackrabbits at the plate. Cain also tallied two of SDSU's nine hits.
Emery allowed eight runs - six earned - in 5 1/3 innings as he suffered his first loss in a Jackrabbit uniform. Austin Busse pitched scoreless ball the final 2 2/3 innings.
Nebraska starter Tyler Niederklein pitched his scheduled four innings and was credited with the victory after holding the Jackrabbits scoreless while striking out four, walking two and allowing two hits.
Kiser was 3-for-4 to lead the Cornhuskers' 12-hit attack. Peters and Christensen each tallied a pair of hits.
The Jackrabbits return to action with a four-game series at Northern Colorado Friday through Sunday.
