IOWA CITY, Iowa - South Dakota State struck for six runs in the second inning and recorded its sixth consecutive victory by defeating Iowa, 10-5, in college baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Duane Banks Field.
By sweeping the two-game series, the Jackrabbits reached the .500 mark for the first time this season as they improved to 9-9. Iowa dropped to 9-13 overall.
SDSU took advantage of shaky Hawkeye defense in sending 10 batters to the plate in the top of the second inning. Zach Rhodes opened the inning by being hit by a pitch and moved to third after an errant throw on a play at second base one batter later. Rhodes scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Eric Cain. The Jackrabbits then strung together three consecutive singles, the last by Zach Briggs that plated Jesse Sawyer. With two outs, Andrew Phelan came through with a two-run single and the final two runs of the frame scored when Joel Blake reached on the Hawkeyes' third error of the inning.
Iowa came back with two runs in the home half of the second on an RBI double by Chett Zeise and a sacrifice fly by Bryan Niedbalski.
The Jackrabbits built the lead to 7-2 on a run-scoring double by Rhodes in the fourth before Iowa trimmed the margin to 7-5 with single runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings against SDSU starter Stephen Bougher.
Kolton Emery entered the game with two outs in the sixth inning and held the Hawkeyes scoreless the rest of the way. The freshman right-hander surrendered only two hits and struck out four in earning his first career save.
SDSU added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh inning on a run-scoring single by Daniel Telford and a sacrifice fly by Phelan, then tacked on another run in the eighth as Daniel Marra delivered a run-scoring single.
Beau Hanowski was 4-for-4 for the Jackrabbits, who out-hit Iowa, 16-10. Phelan, Blake and Sawyer each notched a pair of hits. Zeise and Mike McQuillan were each 3-for-4 with a double for Iowa.
Of the five runs Bougher allowed, only three were earned. The sophomore right-hander from Papillion, Neb., scattered eight hits, walked three and struck out three as he improved to 3-2 on the season.
Weather-permitting, SDSU is scheduled to open the home season Tuesday (April 5) against Mount Marty. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Erv Huether Field.
