SDSU baseball team splits

MARTIN, Tenn. - Blake Treinen struck out 11 batters in eight scoreless innings to lead the South Dakota State baseball team to its first win of the season, a 2-0 victory over Tennessee-Martin Sunday afternoon.
Earlier in the day, the Jackrabbits dropped a 14-5 decision to complete a suspended game that began on Friday. SDSU is 1-4 on the season, while UTM moved to 3-7.
A senior right-hander from Osage City, Kan., Treinen scattered seven hits, all of which were singles, as he evened his record at 1-1. He struck out the side in the first inning and notched at least one strikeout in six of the eight innings he pitched.
The Jackrabbits broke a scoreless deadlock with a run in the seventh inning. Andrew Phelan led off with a single and scored on Daniel Telford's double to centerfield. SDSU added an unearned run in the eighth inning as Billy Stitz reached on a two-base error and came around to score on successive wild pitches.
Phelan and Joel Blake each tallied two of the Jackrabbits' six hits.
Trever Vermeulen pitched a perfect ninth inning for the save.
In the opener, UT Martin scored eight straight runs en route to the 14-5 victory.
Trailing 3-0, the Skyhawks scored five runs in the bottom of the second, including a three-run home run by Phil Sorenson. UTM added three runs against Jackrabbit starter Alex Oberle in the fourth inning and tacked on three more in sixth off reliever Austin Busse.
Blake and Eric Cain each had two of SDSU's 13 hits. Stitz and Daniel Marra each collected a pair of hits.
The Jackrabbits committed a Division I-era-worst six errors in the contest.
The two teams are scheduled to play a makeup game at 3 p.m. Monday to close out their abbreviated series.
