CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Freshman Kolton Emery pitched a complete game and Zach Rhodes went 3-for-5 with three runs batted in as the South Dakota State University baseball team notched an 8-2 victory at Austin Peay Wednesday afternoon.
In earning a split of the two-game series, the Jackrabbits improved to 3-5 overall. APSU dropped to 7-4.
SDSU opened the scoring in the top of the first as Billy Stitz led off with a single, moved to second on a walk and later scored on a base hit by Andrew Phelan. Stitz plated an unearned run with a single in the second inning to put the Jackrabbits up 2-0.
The Governors tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run home run by Rolando Gautier. It would be last of APSU's four hits in the game as Emery retired the last 14 batters he faced after allowing a fifth-inning walk.
The Jackrabbits took the lead for good with a three-run fifth inning. Beau Hanowski scored the first run of the frame on a wild pitch, followed by sacrifice fly by Phelan and a run-scoring single by Rhodes.
Rhodes completed the SDSU scoring with a two-run single as part of a three-run ninth inning.
Emery struck out three and walked three in earning his first collegiate victory.
SDSU finishes its spring break trip with a three-game series Friday through Sunday at Creighton.
