SHREVEPORT, La. - South Dakota State rallied to take the lead in the late innings of both games of a Summit League baseball doubleheader Saturday, sweeping Centenary by scores of 4-1 and 4-3 at Shehee Stadium.
The Jackrabbits ran their winning streak to seven games and won for the 16th time in 17 games to improve to 19-10 overall and 6-1 in league play. Centenary dropped to 3-20 overall, 0-7 in The Summit League.
In the opener, SDSU gained the lead with three runs after two were out in the seventh inning and Blake Treinen turned in a complete-game effort.
Billy Stitz started the rally with a single and advanced to third on a base hit by Joel Blake. Zach Rhodes then stepped to the plate and lined a double to the right-center field alley to score both Stitz and Blake and chase Gent starter Seth Lugo from the game. Eric Cain greeted reliever Derek Dalzell with a base hit that plated Rhodes.
SDSU added a run in the ninth on an RBI single by Jesse Sawyer.
Rhodes' game-winning double was the only extra-base hit out of the Jackrabbits' 14 hits in the game. Sawyer was 4-for-5, while Stitz, Cain and Daniel Telford each collected two hits.
Centenary took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Jeff Schaffert that scored Matt Creamer.
Treinen allowed only one hit the rest of the way and four total, striking out seven and walking one as he improved to 3-2 on the season.
Lugo also struck out seven and walked one in 6 2/3 innings for Centenary. He allowed the first three runs and surrendered nine hits.
In the nitecap, Centenary led 3-0 through two innings, scoring the first two runs on sacrifice fly and its final run on a triple by MarkGilean.
SDSU chipped away, tallying single runs in the each of the fourth and fifth innings. Billy Stitz led off the fourth with a triple and scored on a groundout by Blake. Phil Paquette delivered a sacrifice fly to give the Jackrabbits an unearned run in the fifth.
The Jackrabbits took advantage of a double error to take the lead in the top of the sixth. With one out, Blake came around to score all the way from first base when Zach Rhodes reached on an error and the subsequent throw to try to retire Blake at third base was mishandled. Cain drove in the game-winning run with a single up the middle to score Rhodes.
SDSU starter Alex Oberle retired the last 11 batters he faced before giving way to closer Trever Vermeulen with one out in the sixth. Vermeulen proceeded to retire all five batters he faced including three by strikeout, to earn his fourth save of the season.
Oberle struck out only one and walked one while scattering four hits in evening his record at 3-3.
Stitz and Cain each had two of the Jackrabbits' seven hits.
Centenary hurler Derek Dalzell struck out two and walked one in a complete-game effort.
The Jackrabbits will attempt to finish off a sweep of the series on Sunday. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
