YANKTON - Playing for the first time on South Dakota soil this season, the South Dakota State University baseball team extended its winning streak to seven games with an 8-3 victory over Mount Marty College Wednesday afternoon at Riverside Park.
The Jackrabbits improved to 10-9 overall, while Mount Marty dropped to 11-15.
SDSU never trailed, scoring in each of the first two innings. The Jackrabbits opened the game with three straight singles before Eric Cain walked with the bases loaded to force in Beau Hanowksi with the first run of the game.
The Jackrabbits added a pair of runs in the second inning on run-scoring singles by Erik DeJong and Phil Paquette before the Lancers made it a 3-2 game on a two-run home run by Logan Kortan in the home half of the second.
SDSU broke open the game with a four-run fourth inning. Paquette delivered his second RBI single of the game, followed by sacrifice flies by Joel Blake and Zach Rodes. Cain singled in the final run of the inning.
Mount Marty got a run back in the bottom of the fourth as Mike Johnson led off with a double and Jason Livermont came through with a two-out run-scoring single.
Jackrabbit starter Kolton Emery worked five innings in picking up his third win of the season. The freshman right-hander struck out three, walked four and scattered seven hits. Alex Oberle allowed only one hit in three scoreless innings and Trever Vermeulen pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
Paquette was 3-for-4 to lead SDSU's 13-hit attack. Hanowski, Blake, Cain, Daniel Telford and DeJong accounted for the Jackrabbits' other hits with two each.
Jason Schmidt went 3-for-3 for the Lancers, who tallied eight hits.
