The South Dakota State softball team battled through some adversity and hung tough against Southern Utah starting pitcher Heather Black, but the Thunderbirds pushed one run across in the seventh inning to secure a 2-1 win in the rubber game against the Jackrabbits.
Southern Utah improves to 18-21 overall and stays atop The Summit League with a 9-3 mark. The Jackrabbits fall to 8-26 overall and 5-7 in league play.
SDSU scored first in the first inning, when Devon Reick opened the game with a single, advanced to second on an Emily Weber sacrifice bunt and to third on a past ball before Ashley Durazo drove her home with a single up the middle.
SUU tied the game in top of the second, capitalizing on four straight walks to tie the game at 1-1 before SDSU starter Kori Seidlitz gave way to Pam Nicholson, who pitched out of a bases loaded, no outs jam to keep the Jacks in the game.
Black settled in after the first inning, striking out the next eight Jackrabbits and giving up just one more hit the rest of the game. Black finished the game with 15 strikeouts and did not walk a batter in picking up her 14th win of the season.
Nicholson looked good in relief, giving up just the one run on five hits with no walks and three strikeouts over the final six innings,
The Jacks return to the road this week with doubleheaders at Wisconsin on Wednesday and Green Bay on Thursday before returning to Summit League play at IUPUI on Saturday.
