OMAHA, Neb. – Tyler Fox and Cory Buckley combined on a four-hit shutout, pitching Omaha to least a share of the Summit League baseball regular season title with a 6-0 victory over South Dakota State Thursday afternoon at the Ballpark at Boys Town.
The Mavericks improved to 25-21 overall and 18-5 in The Summit League. SDSU dropped to 30-19 overall, 15-8 in league play. The Jackrabbits will need to win the final three games of the series to share the league title, starting with a Friday doubleheader at 1 p.m.
Omaha wasted little time to take the lead as Clayton Taylor led off the bottom of the first with a base hit, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a single through the right side by Ryan Keele.
The Mavericks scored an unearned run the third inning against SDSU starter Layne Somsen, then added a pair of runs in the fourth on an RBI double by Alex Schultz and run-scoring single by Taylor. Omaha made it 5-0 in the fifth inning on a squeeze bunt by Caleb Palensky that scored Tyler Splichal, who led off the frame with a double.
Fox, meanwhile, limited the Jackrabbits to three hits in seven innings, striking out five and walking three. Buckley added a pair of strikeouts in two innings.
Taylor and Brett Bass each tallied three of the Mavericks' 13 hits.
Somsen, who entered the day with a 1.54 earned run average, allowed five runs — four earned — and 10 hits in five innings of work. He struck out five, but did not walk a batter.
All four of SDSU's hits were singles — by Aaron Machbitz, Paul Jacobson, Eric Danforth and Nick Andrews.
