PHILADELPHIA — With the 2014 season officially in the books, the South Dakota State University football team concluded the campaign ranked 12th and 13th in the final major Football Championship Subdivision polls of the year.
The Jackrabbits, who made their third consecutive appearance in the FCS playoffs, finished the 2014 campaign with a 9-5 overall record after reaching the second round of the postseason. SDSU's 12th-place showing came in the Sports Network media poll, while being ranked 13th in the FCS Coaches ranking.
SDSU, coached by John Stiegelmeier, was one of six Missouri Valley Football Conference teams to appear in the final polls. National champion North Dakota State and runner-up Illinois State finished 1-2 in both polls, while Northern Iowa was 10th in both rankings. Indiana State (19th TSN, 18th FCS) and Youngstown State (22nd TSN, 25th FCS) rounded out the league contingent.
The Jackrabbits' showings marked their second-highest final rankings in the polls. SDSU has now appeared in the final Sports Network poll six times in 11 seasons of FCS competition, with the highest final ranking an 11th-place effort in both polls in 2009.
