JACKSON, Miss. – South Dakota State scored five times in the top of the sixth inning en route to a 7-4 victory over Mississippi Valley State in college baseball action Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, the Jackrabbits improved to 7-6 overall in wrapping up a successful Southern swing during which they won five of six games.
Trailing 2-1 through five innings, SDSU sent 10 men to the plate in the five-run sixth inning. Freshmen Luke Ringhofer and Newt Johnson opened the frame with consecutive singles to chase MVSU starter Blake Thomas. Reliever Brady McBride failed to record an out against the five batters he faced as Anthony Schneider loaded the bases with a bunt single and Eric Danforth was hit by a pitch to force in the tying run. Paul Jacobson gave the Jackrabbits the lead for good with a run-scoring single, followed by Coppola being hit by a pitch to force in the third run of the inning.
Tony Kjolsing made the score 5-2 Jackrabbits with a base hit to knock out McBride, and Reid Clary delivered the final run of the inning with an RBI groundout.
The Delta Devils scored against the Jackrabbit bullpen in the home half of the sixth inning on an RBI double by Juan Casanova and added a run in the bottom of the ninth against SDSU closer J.D. Moore.
The Jackrabbits quickly took the lead in the top of the first inning as Coppola walked, moved to third on a single by Kjolsing and scored on a wild pitch.
MVSU answered with a run on two singles, a sacrifice bunt and RBI groundout in the second and took its lone lead of the game with an unearned run in the fourth after executing a double steal.
SDSU starter Ryan Froom allowed three hits and two runs over five innings, striking out four and walking one. Four Jackrabbit relievers each pitched one inning.
The Jackrabbits finished with a 10-8 advantage in the hits column. Kjolsing, Matt Johnson and Newt Johnson each tallied a pair of hits for SDSU.
Summit League play begins Friday as the Jackrabbits travel to Omaha to take on the defending regular-season-champion Mavericks in the opening game of a three-game series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at the Ballpark at Boys Town.
