WESTFIELD, Ind. — South Dakota State jumped out to an early lead and Adam Bray pitched seven strong innings as the Jackrabbit baseball team opened a three-game Summit League series with an 8-2 victory over Fort Wayne.
With the win, the Jackrabbits improved to 10-11 overall and 3-4 in The Summit League. Fort Wayne fell to 11-10 overall, 2-5 in league play.
SDSU got out of the gates quickly, scoring three batters into the game. Paul Jacobson continued his hot hitting by leading off with a double, advanced to third base on a bunt single by Zach Coppola and scored on a groundout by Luke Ringhofer.
The Jackrabbit lead grew to 4-0 with a three-run second inning. Eric Danforth plated Al Robbins with the first run of the frame and Cody Sharrow scored on a wild pitch after the first of his two doubles in the game. Coppola knocked in Danforth with the final run of the inning on a bunt single.
Reid Clary pushed the SDSU advantage to 5-0 with a run-scoring single in the top of the fifth before Fort Wayne scored single runs against Bray in each of the fifth and sixth innings.
However, the Jackrabbits answered each time, tacking on runs in sixth, seventh and eighth. Coppola's third hit of the game scored Jacobson in the sixth inning, while the other two runs scored on sacrifice flies by Clary and Matt Johnson.
Bray scattered seven hits, struck out three and walked one over his seven innings. Joe Erickson finished on the mound for the Jackrabbits with two shutout innings in which he struck out three.
