BATON ROUGE, La. – Southern University controlled the late innings to pull away for a 10-4 victory over South Dakota State in a college baseball series finale Sunday at Lee-Hines Field.

The homestanding Jaguars improved to 2-10 overall. SDSU, which won the first three games of the four-game series, dropped to 5-6 overall.

As they did throughout the series, the Jackrabbits scored first. Paul Jacobson and Zach Coppola opened the game with back-to-back singles before moving up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Tony Kjolsing. Jacobson came across for the first run of the game on a groundout by Matt Johnson.

Jacobson made the score 3-0 in the top of the second as he hit a two-run double to center field that scored both Sam Krick and Al Robbins.

After pitching four shutout innings, Jackrabbit starter Eldon Evans ran into trouble in the home half of the fifth as Southern scored five times – all after the first two batters of the inning were retired. Lance Jones started what turned out to be the game-winning rally with a single down the right field line. Jose DeLaTorre followed three batters later with a two-run single to put the Jaguars on the board. Later in the inning, Stephen Wallace greeted reliever Ryan Froom with an RBI single that knotted the game at 3-all. Rivers Frederick later plated the final two runs of the frame with a base hit.

The Jaguars tacked on three runs in the sixth inning and two more in the eighth, the final runs scoring on a two-run home run by Tyler Kirksey.

Kjolsing drove in the final run of the game for SDSU with an infield single in the top of the ninth.

Jacobson and Coppola each tallied three of the Jackrabbits' 11 hits. DeLaTorre and Kirksey each posted three of Southern's 14 hits.

Southern starter James Fontenot struck out seven batters and walked only one over seven innings.

The Jackrabbits resume their Spring Break trip Monday with a 12:30 p.m. contest against Tougaloo (Miss.) in New Orleans.
