NEW ORLEANS, La. – Jesse Munsterman and Zach Holt each went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs to lead the South Dakota State University baseball team to a 13-1 victory over Touglaoo (Miss.) Monday afternoon.
With the win, the Jackrabbits improved to 6-6 overall and upped their record on their Spring Break trip to 4-1. The game was called after the top of the seventh inning due to rain.
SDSU batted around in the top of the first inning to grab a 4-0 lead. After Zach Coppola scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch, freshman Newt Johnson drove in the second run on a double down the left-field line. Munsterman followed with a run-scoring single and Holt delivered a sacrifice fly.
The Jackrabbits sent 12 men to the plate in a seven-run fourth inning. Holt singled twice in the inning to drive in one run and Munsterman added a two-run single. Matt Johnson, who also was 2-for-3, drove in his second run of the game during the inning.
SDSU starter Joe Erickson allowed the lone Tougaloo run in the fourth inning on a single up the middle by Marcus Brumfield. Erickson scattered three hits, struck out five and walked one in four innings. The last six outs recorded by Jackrabbit pitchers all came via strikeouts as Austin Kost fanned four and Blake Fiedelman tallied two.
The Jackrabbits held an 11-4 advantage in hits for the game.
SDSU resumes action Tuesday at Southern Missisippi. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
