Freshman Luke Ringhofer drove in three runs and the Jackrabbit bullpen threw six scoreless innings to lead South Dakota State to a 5-1 victory over Dakota State Wednesday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.
In winning their seventh game in a row, the Jackrabbits improved to 22-13 overall. DSU dropped to 10-30.
Dakota State scored its lone run of the game in the top of the first inning. Tony Poncia walked with one out, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on Jordan Entrikin's single to left field.
The Jackrabbits answered with runs in each of their first three times to the plate, extending their streak of scoring in consecutive innings to 11 following a rout of North Dakota on Tuesday. Paul Jacobson led off the home half of the first with a double down the left-field line and scored two batters later on a groundout by Ringhofer.
In the second inning, Matt Johnson led off with a double down the right field line and scored when Al Robbins doubled to center field.
SDSU put the game out of reach with a three-run third inning. Ringhofer tripled in both Jacobson and Zach Coppola, and later came across on a groundout off the bat of Tony Kjolsing.
Jackrabbit starter Ethan Kenkel worked the first three innings, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out one. Five relievers combined for nine strikeouts over the next six innings, including three by Derringer Huff in the sixth inning and three by Blake Fiedelman during the seventh and eighth innings.
Robbins was 2-for-3 to lead the Jackrabbits' seven-hit effort. DSU also finished with seven hits, led by Ryler Ratkie going 3-for-3 and Nick Serrata ending the day 2-for-3.
SDSU returns to Summit League action Friday, hosting Omaha in the opening game of a three-game series at 3 p.m. Friday. The two teams enter the weekend tied for second place in the league standings.
