Omaha grabbed the lead with a six-run fourth inning and held off South Dakota State's comeback bid, ending the Jackrabbits' eight-game winning streak with an 8-6 Summit League baseball victory Saturday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.
The Mavericks, who moved back into a tie with SDSU for second place in the league standings, improved to 17-18 overall and 10-7 league play. The Jackrabbits dropped to 23-14 overall and 10-7.
South Dakota State scored two batters into the home half of the first inning as Paul Jacobson tripled to left-center field and scored on a groundout by Zach Coppola. Coppola later set the Jackrabbit single-season stolen base record, ending the day with 29.
Omaha tied the game with a two-out rally in the third inning. Cole Gruber walked and moved to third on a single by Clayton Taylor before scoring on a base hit by Alex Mortensen.
The Mavericks sent 10 men to the plate in the fourth inning, scoring six times. Omaha's Daniel Jewett opened the inning by reaching on an error. Jewett and Mark Handberg scored the respective tying and go-ahead runs when Alex Schultz chopped a double down the left-field line. Gruber and Ryan Cate each added two-run singles later in the frame.
SDSU countered with three unearned runs in the home half of the fifth. The first two runs scored on errors, with Matt Johnson lining a single to right to score Luke Ringhofer and cut the deficit to 7-4.
The Jackrabbits tallied another run in the seventh when Coppola led off with a single, stole his third base of the game and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Reid Clary.
Reliever Andrew Clemen kept the Jackrabbits in the game with six solid innings of relief. The junior right-hander retired 10 straight Omaha batters in one stretch before allowing a run in the top of the ninth as Taylor led off with a triple and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Mortensen.
Clary, who was 3-for-4, accounted for the final SDSU run with a solo home run on the first pitch of the bottom of the ninth. The Jackrabbits brought the tying run to the plate after a two-out walk to Anthony Schneider, but Maverick reliever Brett Sasse struck out Cody Sharrow to end the game.
UNO starter Zach Willamsen struck out seven and walked three over five innings in a winning effort. Cole Volkers followed with three innings of one-run relief before giving way to Sasse in the ninth.
Jackrabbit starter Chris Anderson lasted only three-plus innings after struggling with his control to start the fourth. Anderson walked three, hit two batters and struck out two. Clemen fanned four and walked one in his relief stint.
Each team finished with 10 hits. Taylor was 3-for-5 to lead the Mavericks, while Jacobson tied for the SDSU team lead with three hits in five trips to the plate.
The two teams are scheduled to play the series finale at 1 p.m. Sunday.
