TULSA, Okla. – Matt Whatley singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning, lifting Oral Roberts to an 8-7 victory over South Dakota State in a back-and-forth Summit League baseball series finale Sunday afternoon at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
The Golden Eagles improved to 29-13 overall and 16-5 in league play to strengthen their lead to three games over SDSU. The Jackrabbits, who won the first two games of the series, dropped to 26-16 overall and 13-8 in The Summit League.
Trailing 4-0, the Jackrabbits scored the next seven runs with two in the fourth and five in the sixth. Freshman Luke Ringhofer accounted for both runs in the fourth inning with a two-run home run that scored Paul Jacobson ahead of him. It was Ringhofer's third home run of the season.
SDSU sent 10 men to the plate in the five-run sixth. Jacobson started the rally with a single and moved to third on Zach Coppola's double to right field. Both Jacobson and Coppola scored on passed balls to tie the game, and Tony Kjolsing plated Ringhofer with a single to give the Jackrabbits their first lead of the game. SDSU added runs later in the frame on an error and run-scoring single by Eric Danforth.
The Golden Eagles pulled to within 7-5 in the seventh on an RBI single by Anthony Sequiera, then tied the game in the bottom of the eighth on a two-out, two-run homer by Derrian James off Jackrabbit reliever Marcus Heemstra.
ORU put together the winning rally in the 10th, starting with a leadoff single by Dean Wilson. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Chase Stafford and scored when Whatley delivered his fourth hit of the game, a single to right field.
The Golden Eagles scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, two of which were unearned, and built the lead to 4-0 in the third on a run-scoring single by Logan Domenico.
Anthony Sequeira, who pitched four innings of scoreless relief to earn the win, also went 3-for-5 at the plate and drove in two runs after starting the game as the designated hitter. ORU finished with a 13-10 advantage in hits.
The Jackrabbits' 10-hit attack was led by Jacobson, who was 3-for-5. Coppola and Kjolsing each tallied two hits.
SDSU starter Ryan Froom struck out three and walked three in five innings. Heemstra took the loss as he allowed three runs, while striking out two, in two innings.
