Summit League-leading Oral Roberts snapped South Dakota State's six-game winning streak with a 5-3 victory Friday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.
In winning the series opener, the Golden Eagles ran their own winning streak to nine games in improving to 19-9 overall and 9-1 in league play. SDSU dropped to 14-12 overall and 5-5 in The Summit League.
The game had the makings of a slugfest in the early going as the teams traded big innings.
The Jackrabbits jumped out to 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, getting on the board first as freshman Luke Ringhofer doubled to right center to score Paul Jacobson, who led off with a walk. Reid Clary and Tony Kjolsing added two-out run-scoring singles later in the frame.
ORU came back with four runs in the top of the second inning against SDSU starter Adam Bray to take a lead it would not relinquish. Dean Wilson plated the first run with a base hit before Chase Stafford drew a bases-loaded walk. The Golden Eagles tied the game on a groundout and gained the lead when Audie Afenir scored on a wild pitch.
The Golden Eagles scored what proved to be the final run of the game in top of the third as Nick Roark doubled down the left-field line to score Derrian James after the lone Jackrabbit error of the game extended the inning.
Both Bray and ORU starter Guillermo Trujillo settled into a rhythm for the remainder of their outings. Trujillo, who left the game with an apparent injury while warming up to start the sixth inning, did not allow a hit over his final four innings and retired the final eight hitters he faced. He struck out three and walked one in improving to 5-2 on the season.
Bray allowed nine hits and two walks, while striking out five in six innings. Marcus Heemstra pitched three scoreless innings of relief for the Jackrabbits, recording one strikeout and allowing only one hit.
SDSU placed a runner at third against the Golden Eagle bullpen in the eighth inning, but couldn't close the gap. Anthony Sequeira recorded the final five outs for ORU to earn the save.
Afenir and Wilson each tallied two hits for ORU, which held a 10-5 advantage in hits.
The two squads are scheduled to play the middle game of their three-game series at 1 p.m. Saturday.
NOTES: Friday's game marked the first meeting between SDSU and ORU since 2012 … the Golden Eagles lead the all-time series 29-8 … Ringhofer extended his hitting streak to seven games … Zach Coppola reached base for the 20th straight game and stole his 18th base this season in as many attempts … Bray moved into a tie with Caleb Thielbar (2006-09) for second place on the SDSU career starts list with 44 and passed Thielbar for second place in career innings pitched with 279.2 … Bray also upped his career strikeout total to 223 to moved to within three of tying the Jackrabbit mark of 226 set by Trevor Schulte from 1991-94
