The South Dakota State University baseball team got back on the winning track Wednesday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader from the University of Winnipeg at Erv Huether Field.
The Jackrabbits won the seven-inning games by scores of 6-2 and 11-1 to improve to 17-13 overall. SDSU returns to Summit League play this weekend, hosting North Dakota State at 3 p.m. Friday to open a three-game series.
In the opener, the Jackrabbits scored five times in the third inning en route to the 6-2 victory. Paul Jacobson started the rally with a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on a single to right center by Zach Coppola. Coppola later scored on a groundout before Tony Kjolsing added a two-out RBI single and Cody Sharrow followed with a two-run double.
Coppola scored the final Jackrabbit run in the fourth inning, crossing the plate on a run-scoring single by freshman Newt Johnson. Coppola went 3-for-3 at the plate, while Johnson was 2-for-3 to lead SDSU's 10-hit attack.
Winnipeg scored both of its runs in the sixth inning on a two-run double by Paul Esteves, who was 2-for-3. The Wesmen finished with six hits, after being held without a hit until one out in the fifth inning.
Chad Hodges started for the Jackrabbits and worked the first two innings, striking out three and walking one. Derringer Huff also fanned three batters in two innings of relief. The five SDSU pitchers to work in the game combined to strike out 10 batters.
In Game 2, SDSU sent 14 men to the plate and scored eight times in the second inning in cruising to the 11-1 victory. Kjolsing doubled in two runs, while Eric Danforth and Anthony Schneider also delivered run-scoring hits for the Jackrabbits, who were aided by three Winnipeg errors in the inning.
Coppola opened the scoring in the bottom of the first by doubling with one out before coming home on the first of four Winnipeg errors in the game.
Danforth tripled in a run in the third and Al Robbins capped the Jackrabbit scoring with an RBI double. Danforth was 3-for-4 to pace SDSU's 12-hit effort, with both of Robbins' hits going for doubles.
Esteves knocked in Winnipeg's lone run of Game 2 with a solid single to right following a Jackrabbit error to open the inning. The Wesmen, 1-26 overall, managed only two hits – both singles – in the nightcap.
Ethan Kenkel pitched two scoreless innings in his first career start. The sophomore right-hander struck out three and walked one en route to the victory. Five other Jackrabbit pitchers worked an inning in relief, with Marcus Heemstra and Austin Kost each recording a pair of strikeouts.
