GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The South Dakota State University baseball team played its final non-conference games of the regular season Tuesday, splitting a doubleheader with the University of North Dakota. The Jackrabbits won the opener, 4-1, at Kraft Field before falling 4-3 in Game 2.
SDSU moved to 31-20 on the season, while UND ended the day 20-25 overall.
In the opener, Chad Hodges struck out seven and allowed only one run in six innings to earn the victory.
SDSU produced all the offense it would need with two runs on only one hit in the second inning. Matt Johnson walked and Tony Kjolsing was hit by a pitch to open the frame. Both runners moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Al Robbins before Cody Sharrow plated Johnson with the first run on a sacrifice fly before Eric Danforth tallied the lone hit of the frame with a run-scoring single that drove in Kjolsing.
UND scored its lone run of the game in the home half of the second as Ryan Reese led off with a double and came across on a groundout.
The Jackrabbits added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Danforth led off the fifth with a single and scored on a bases-loaded walk to Johnson. Robbins tripled to lead off the sixth and scored on a groundout by Danforth, who was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Jesse Munsterman led the Jackrabbits' eight-hit effort by going 3-for-4. Zach Coppola also contributed a pair of hits.
Hodges surrendered only three hits and did not issue a walk in improving to 4-1 on the season. J.D. Moore pitched a scoreless seventh – and final – inning for his sixth save of the season.
In Game 2, UND scored twice in the bottom of the eighth and held on for a 4-3 victory. Zach Heaser started the game-winning rally by drawing a leadoff walk and later scored on Tyler Follis' fourth hit of the game. Sam Alt later came through with a two-out single to drive in Follis with the game winner.
Jeff Campbell, who also had a hit in the decisive eighth inning, pitched the final two innings to pick up the win in relief. Five of the six outs Campbell recorded were via the strikeout.
The two teams traded runs in both the fourth and sixth innings. Sam Krick plated the fourth-inning run for SDSU with a single that scored Coppola, and the sixth-inning run scored on an error. For UND, Reese hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth and Follis drove in Dalton Parrot with a base hit.
SDSU took a momentary lead in the seventh inning with an unearned run following two UND errors.
Jackrabbit starter Ethan Kenkel allowed one run over four innings. Eldon Evans took the loss in relief.
Brett DeGagne pitched the first seven innings for UND, walking four and striking out seven to give UND pitchers 12 strikeouts in the game.
The Jackrabbits are scheduled to host Fort Wayne Thursday through Saturday in the final series of the Summit League season. First pitch Thursday is set for 3 p.m. at Erv Huether Field.
