After a disappointing loss in the opening game of its three-game series against Fort Wayne, the South Dakota State University baseball team responded Friday with a 15-0, seven-inning drubbing of the visiting Mastodons at Erv Huether Field.
The Jackrabbits, who improved to 32-21 overall and 18-11 in The Summit League, scored seven times in the first inning in cruising to the victory. Paul Jacobson and Zach Coppola opened the frame with walks and each moved into scoring position on a double steal. Reid Clary drove in the first two runs with a base hit to left field and scored two batters later on a single by Newt Johnson. Other runs scored on an error and groundout before Jacobson lined a single down the left-field line to score Al Robbins. Eric Danforth scored the final run of the inning on the back end of a double steal.
SDSU tacked on three more runs in the second as Clary delivered his second run-scoring hit in as many innings, chasing Fort Wayne starter Trevor Storie. A groundout and ensuing error plated the last two runs of the inning.
Jackrabbit starter Chris Anderson worked an efficient five shutout innings, striking out five while allowing five hits and two walks in improving to 8-2 on the season. Andrew Clemen finished with two scoreless innings in which he struck out two.
SDSU put the 10-run rule further into effect with a five-run fifth inning in which it recorded only one hit. Fort Wayne pitchers issued five walks in the inning, including bases-loaded free passes to Clary and Matt Johnson. Newt Johnson notched the only hit of the inning on which three runs scored after an outfield error.
Matt Johnson was 3-for-3 to lead the Jackrabbits' nine-hit effort. Clary finished the afternoon 2-for-3 with four runs batted in and three runs scored, with Newt Johnson adding two hits and two RBI.
The two teams are scheduled to play the series and regular season finale at 1 p.m. Saturday.
