Luke Ringhofer drove in a career-high six runs to lead a Jackrabbit offensive outburst as South Dakota State defeated Western Illinois, 19-9, in Summit League baseball action Saturday afternoon at Erv Huether Field. The game was called after eight innings due to the 10-run rule.
The Jackrabbits, who ended a three-game losing streak, improved to 27-18 overall and 14-9 in The Summit League. With the win, SDSU secured a berth in the upcoming four-team Summit League Baseball Championship. Western Illinois dropped to 15-27 overall and 8-15 in league play.
Each team started out with three straight hits to break into the scoring column in the first inning. Consecutive singles by Brent Turner, Colton Pogue and Jake Moore led to the Fighting Leatherneck run.
SDSU responded as Paul Jacobson and Zach Coppola opened the home half of the first with base hits, and Jesse Munsterman followed with a double into the left-field corner that scored both Jacobson and Coppola.
The Jackrabbits continued to put up runs in bunches, scoring three times in both the second and fourth innings and tacking on four runs in the third to build a 12-4 lead through four innings. Ringhofer, a freshman from Cottage Grove, Minnesota, singled in two runs in the second to run his hitting streak to 12 games, and cleared the bases for a three-run double in the third.
Ringhofer's sixth RBI of the game came on a bases-loaded walk in the fourth. All of his runs batted in came with two outs.
Western Illinois trimmed the margin to 12-9 with three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Mark Garton accounted for the fifth-inning runs with a three-run home run off Jackrabbit starter Chris Anderson and added a run-scoring single in the sixth. Chris Tschida singled home the other Fighting Leatherneck run in the sixth.
The Jackrabbits scored the final seven runs of the game, striking for three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Munsterman delivered his third RBI of the game with a base hit to score Jacobson, and Reid Clary followed with a two-run homer to left-center field.
All four of SDSU's runs in the game-ending eighth inning were unearned. Munsterman reached on an error to open the inning, which included a run-scoring single by Cody Sharrow and a bases-loaded walk to Jacobson. Coppola's single down the third-base line brought home Sharrow with the final run.
Jacobson went 4-for-5 to lead SDSU's 18-hit attack. Coppola and Danforth each tallied three hits to extend their long streaks of reaching base safely to 39 and 33 games, respectively.
Pogue paced WIU's 11-hit effort with a 3-for-4 afternoon at the plate.
Anderson exited after five innings, but earned his sixth win of the season after allowing only two earned runs with five strikeouts and three walks. Talon Jumper pitched the final three innings and was credited with his third save of the season.
WIU starter Tom Constand lasted only 1 2/3 innings before leaving with an apparent injury. He walked three and struck out one, allowing five earned runs.
SDSU and Western Illinois will play the final game of their three-game series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
