FARGO, N.D. – Redshirt freshman Mike Daum netted his first-career double-double on Saturday in Fargo, but the cold weather outside found its way inside Scheels Arena, where South Dakota State shot a season-low 29 percent from the floor in a 68-57 loss to North Dakota State.
The loss drops the Jackrabbits to 14-5 on the season, while the host Bison improve to 13-6. Both teams end the day with the same 3-2 record in Summit League play.
"It was pretty similar to last year, very low-energy first half and I thought our kids played really hard in the second half, but you're not going to beat anybody shooting 29 percent and going 6 for 32 from three. Some of those threes we had to take, just because we were down, but we had a lot of pretty good looks. We're not shooting the ball great right now," head coach Scott Nagy said. "But that's not the problem, the problem was our level of energy in the first half."
Both team started slow, but the Bison cobbled together a couple of 6-0 spurts, and then added a 10-0 run later in the half to take a 24-11 lead with 5 minutes 19 seconds left in the first half.
SDSU started the game 4 for 18 from the floor and NDSU 5 for 18 from the floor, but NDSU made its next five shots, including a trio of triples, while SDSU missed its next six, which led to a 32-17 Bison lead at the half.
SDSU scored the first four points of the second half, but NDSU scored the next five, part of a 10-3 spurt that gave NDSU its largest lead of the game at 42-25 with 15:43 left.
The Jacks would trim that lead to as few as nine points on three occasions, and then cut it to down two eight on a Reed Tellinghuisen 3-pointer, but that came with under a minute left in the game and NDSU made enough free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Daum finished with 15 points and collected a career- and game-high 13 rebounds for the double-double. George Marshall led the Jacks with 17 points, with Tellinghuisen adding 12 and Deondre Parks 10 points in the loss.
Paul Miller led all players in the game with 17 points, and Kory Brown added 14 in the win.
The Jackrabbits look to rebound from the loss on Thursday, as their three-game road trip continues at Oral Roberts. The Jacks and Golden Eagles tip from Tulsa, Okla., at 7 p.m.
