Sophomore quarterback Taryn Christion accounted for 11 individual single-game or single-season records. The Sioux Falls native and 2016 Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Player of the Year set new Jackrabbit single-season standards for completions (229), attempts (434) and yards passing (3,714), while tying Ryan Berry's single-season touchdown passes mark of 30, first set in 2008.

Junior wide receiver Jake Wieneke etched his name into the record book with his 4,192 career receiving yards and 43 career touchdown receptions —totals that both stand as MVFC career marks. Wieneke also tied his own single-season record for touchdown receptions with 16 and set a new Jackrabbit career mark with a touchdown reception in 26 career games.

Tight end Dallas Goedert's 92 receptions set a new Jackrabbit single-season record, as did Chase Vinatieri's 56 extra points.

Fans also attended Jackrabbit football games in record numbers during the inaugural season of play at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium. SDSU drew a total of 96,268 fans to seven home games for an average of 13,753 per game.
South Dakota State ended the 2016 season with a 9-4 overall record, including winning a share of the Missouri Valley Football Conference regular season title with a 7-1 mark in league play. The Jackrabbits reached the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs for the fifth consecutive season and advanced to the quarterfinal round for the first time in program history.
