Jackrabbits' Last Time Out -- Dec. 19, 2016
Des Moines, Iowa -- Double-digit scoring efforts from four Jackrabbits and free throw shooting down the stretch carried South Dakota State to its first road win of the season, 83-75, over Drake at the Knapp Center Monday evening.
 Â
Mike Daum paced the team with 20 points thanks in part to hitting all seven of his free throw attempts to break the school's consecutive free throw mark. He has now hit his last 40 from the charity stripe.
 Â
Andre Wallace dropped 20 points with three 3-pointers, while
Reed Tellinghuisen was close behind, adding 18 points alongside four rebounds and three assists.
 Â
A.J. Hess reached double figures as well with 10 points as the forward pulled down a team-high seven rebounds, just ahead of
Tevin King's six boards.
SDSU (7-7) moved to the .500 mark for the first time this season and has won three straight. The Jacks, winners of six of their last seven, shot 47.4 percent as a team on the evening and hit 21 of 25 free throws. Beyond the arc, the Jacks shot 32 percent (8 of 25).
Drake (1-10) shot 45.3 percent and was 7 of 8 at the free throw line with 10 3-pointers made.
SDSU won the rebounding battle, 37-30, and capitalized with 12 offensive rebounds for a 21-12 edge in second chance points.
A back-and-forth game through the opening six minutes saw three lead changes and two ties before the first media at 13:52. Out of the reset,
Andre Wallace gave the Jacks the lead with an old-fashioned 3-point play and hit two more 3-pointers over the next three and half minutes to help SDSU push its lead to seven, 19-12.
Drake, however, responded with eight straight to regain the lead, 20-19, inside the nine-minute mark before the Jacks stopped the run on a contested layup from
Ian Theisen and soon ran off eight straight of their own. That burst was part of a larger 13-2 run as SDSU took a 32-22 lead inside six minutes to go in the first.
SDSU saw its lead cut to six (32-26) with 2:26 to go in the half, but the Jackrabbit defense held the Bulldogs scoreless the rest of the half and ran off eight straight to lead, 40-26, at the break.
South Dakota State shot 48.3 percent from the field in the first half and hit six of seven free throws. Drake shot 36.7 percent with a 4 for 20 mark on 3-pointers. The Bulldogs did not attempt a free throw in the half.
The lead fluctuated between 11 and 15 in the opening four minutes of the second, before the Bulldogs went on an 8-0 run to bring the game into single digits (49-42) at 14:47. Tellinghuisen sunk a 3-pointer to stop the run moments later, but Drake continued to push and crawled within two (57-55) just outside the 10-minute mark, with a 9-0 run.
Tellinghuisen scored five straight for the Jackrabbits after a timeout to bring the advantage back to seven (62-55), but couldn't pull away as the Bulldogs closed the gap to two, 64-62, once more at 5:54.
That was as close as the Bulldogs would come, however, as SDSU used a strong presence at the free throw line down the stretch, going 11 of 12 at the line over the final five minutes to secure the win.
Shockers' Last Time Out -- Dec. 17, 2016
(GoShockers.com)
WICHITA, Kan. – Oklahoma State handed Wichita State its first-ever loss at INTRUST Bank Arena, 93-76,  on a frigid, snowy Saturday night.
WSU -- which dropped to 6-1 in its annual downtown game -- couldn't find a rhythm, shooting only 37 percent from the field, including 3-of-17 from long range.
OSU (9-2) blistered the nets, finishing at 53 percent, while pouring in 14 threes on 28 attempts.
Darral Willis Jr. collected his first double-double as a Shocker with a team-best 24 points and 13 rebounds. It was WSU's first point-rebound double-double performance since Feb. 25, 2015 when Darius Carter put up 20 & 11 at Indiana State.
Markis McDuffie sccored 10 of his 14 points at the free throw line to go with six rebounds for WSU (9-3), which saw a four-game winning streak come to an end. Zach Brown chipped in 10 points and six boards of his own.
Jawun Evans and Jeffrey Carroll led Oklahoma State with 22 points apiece, and Leyton Hammonds added 12.
OSU shot out of the gates quickly, grabbing a 10-1 lead three minutes into the game and would never trail by less nine the rest of the way. The Cowboys stretched it to double-figures at the 11-minute mark, 22-9, behind 11 points from Evans.
The Shockers went eight minutes without a field goal and found themselves trailing by as many as 18, 31-13.
Wichita State used a brief spurt to claw within nine points, but the Cowboys immediately responded with an 11-2 run to grab a 16-point cushion at halftime, 49-33.
Carroll led all scorers with 16 first half points, while Evans added 11. Willis scored 10 to lead the Shockers in a half where WSU shot only 33 percent from the field. Oklahoma State lit up the WSU defense to the tune of 52 percent overall, including 6-of-11 from downtown.
The Cowboys led by as many as 25 in the second half and seemed to have an answer for every Shocker basket.
New Faces, Great Places
South Dakota State's hiring of first-year head coach
T.J. Otzelberger was a nod to the state's motto, "Great Faces, Great Places." The new face of the program, announced April 14, 2016, is in his first-ever heading coaching role, but has been groomed for the position over several assistant stops, working with Lorenzo Romar (Washington), Fred Hoiberg (Iowa State), Greg McDermott (Iowa State) and Steve Prohm (Iowa State). Alongside Otzelberger, new members of the coaching staff include
Ben Walker, a Creighton hall of fame member who last coached at Jackson State,
Eric Henderson, a former Wayne State (Neb.) standout who spent last season with SDSU's rival, North Dakota State, and
Tyler Glidden, the director of operations who has worked at Creighton and Iowa State.
Rob Klinkefus was the lone holdover from former head coach Scott Nagy's staff, and enters his 11th season at SDSU.
20-Win Seasons
Reaching the 20-win mark has become a standard at South Dakota State University over the previous five seasons, as the Jackrabbits have done in four times in that span and 23 times in the program's history.Â
