Fans can give cash in bins around Frost Arena or at the concession stands. They can also donate electronically at FeedingSouthDakota.org or using the Venmo App, Feeding-South Dakota. - SDSU has won the SD Corn Showcase Series three times over the last four years.
Why The Confusion?
SDSU and USD have squared off 217 times prior to Saturday, but do not agree on the all-time series record. The lone game in question is the March 12, 1915 contest that SDSU has listed as a 15-15 tie and USD has it marked as a 16-15 win. The following text is from a summer 1969 newspaper clipping that provides insight on the game:
Brookings -- Here's one for the new North Central Conference commissioner ... who won the 1915 basketball game between South Dakota and South Dakota State?
The clubs battled in 1915 to what SDS officials record a tie game and USD officials list as a victory.
The game was the second of a two-game set at Brookings in 1915. The Coyotes had won the first game 28-22.
Here is the story as it appeared in a newspaper write-up following the battle:
"The teams battled to a 7-7 halftime score and as action got tougher in the second half, Alex Culhane of SDS fouled out (with four fouls). Almost immediately, Gene Vidal, USD's star center, drew his fourth foul and left the game.
"Vidal was replaced by Gondolfo, who promptly shot a free throw. State's scorekeeper credited the free throw to Vidal, while USD's scorer gave it to Gondolfo. This made the score 15-15.
"However, USD's scorer, then seeing the creditation by Stat's scorer, added another point to Vidal's scoring, marking it 16-15 for USD ... Thus two points were scored on one free throw."
Some disagreement on the score at the bench came about at this point and, as the 1915 SDS school newspaper reports, "Seeing they were beat with Vidal out, USD refused to finish the game. The score at present stands undecided."
Vidal recently died in Palos Verdes, Calif.
What occured after the game? The newspaper noted: "After calling the game, a pleasant hour of dancing was held in the gymnasium.
The question over 50 years later is: Does the home book stand and who won the game?

Jackrabbits' Last Time Out -- Dec. 28, 2016
South Dakota State opened Summit League play with an 80-69 loss to North Dakota State as its 34-game home winning streak came to an end Wednesday evening at Frost Arena.
SDSU (7-9, 0-1 Summit League) lead by 15 early in the second half but a charging NDSU (9-5, 1-0 Summit League) team used a cold spell to end the Jacks' streak.Â
 Â
Mike Daum led the way with 24 points for the Jackrabbits and added eight rebounds, second on the boards behind
A.J. Hess, who grabbed 10 rebounds.Â
Skyler Flatten and
Tevin King each had 11 points for the Jacks while
Michael Orris finished with six points, six rebounds and four assists.
Five Bison scored in double figures as Paul Miller paced NDSU with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Dexter Warner had a double-double as well, finishing with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
Trailing 4-2 in the opening two minutes, the Jackrabbits opened up an 13-4 lead with a run of 11 unanswered as NDSU went nearly seven minutes without a point. A free throw from NDSU's Khy Kabellis ended SDSU's run at 12:10, and the Bison clawed back to within three (13-10) over the next minute with a run of their own.
SDSU stretched its lead back to seven (20-13) after a fast break layup from
Andre Wallace off a
Tevin King assist at 8:02, but saw the Bison hang within single digits until 2:45 when a putback layup from Daum gave SDSU a 30-19 lead.
The final 92 seconds of the first saw the Jacks end the half on a 7-0 run and went to the locker room ahead, 37-22.
South Dakota State shot 46.2 percent from the field in the opening half while NDSU hit only 30 percent of its shots and went 3 of 18 beyond the arc. The Jackrabbits held a plus-11 (25-14) lead in rebounding margin at the break and outscored NDSU in the paint, 18-10, behind Daum's game-high first half points.
The teams traded baskets through the first two minutes of the second as SDSU's lead stayed at 15 (44-29) before the Bison ran off six straight to draw back within single digits, 44-35, at 16:46.Â
Daum hit a 3-pointer on the other end to end the run, and after a
Reed Tellinghuisen block on the defensive end, an old-fashioned 3-point play from King negated NDSU's rally and moved SDSU's lead back to 15 (50-35), after the under-16 media.
A cold streak hit the Jackrabbits soon after as the team went over nine minutes without a field goal and NDSU climbed back to take a 58-55 lead with 8:36 to play after scoring 15 unanswered.Â
King's free throws at 7:54 ended a scoreless stretch of over five minutes for the Jacks, but the field goal struggles didn't end until 5:10 when Flatten hit a 3-pointer to put SDSU down four, 65-61. NDSU, however, continued to hit shots to keep SDSU at bay down the stretch and the Jacks saw the nation's second longest active streak come to an end.
Coyotes' Last Time Out -- Dec. 29, 2016
(GoYotes.com)
VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota made a strong opening statement to Summit League play with an 86-69, start-to-finish drubbing of Omaha Thursday inside Sanford Coyote Sports Center. It was the team's largest margin of victory in a conference game in four seasons.
Trey Dickerson scored a season-high 17 points while Matt Mooney and Tyler Flack added 16 each as the Coyotes (10-6, 1-0 Summit) improved to 7-0 in their new facility. It was the team's first 1-0 start to Summit play in three seasons.
Omaha (7-7, 0-1), which entered the game with the highest non-conference RPI amongst Summit League teams, trailed 29-9 with less than seven minutes to go in the first half and never recovered. The Mavericks had six field goals in the first half, were 0 for 7 from downtown, and committed 11 turnovers in trailing 45-23 at the break. Zach Jackson led UNO with 14 points.
South Dakota in the first half shot 51 percent from the field, buried half the team's season-high 10 triples, and had a rebounding edge of nine. Dickerson and Mooney combined to equal the Mavs halftime total of 23 points. Dickerson had back-to-back drives to the hoop to spark an 8-0 run to start the game. Mooney hit three 3's in a four-minute stretch in the later part of the half and had 13 in the first.
Most of Flack's performance came near the midway point of the second half when he scored 10 unanswered points and 12 in a row for South Dakota in a span of two minutes. He had just reentered the game after taking a spill that forced him to the athletic training room when he hit his first 3 since November. He followed that with a three-point play, back-to-back mid-range jumpers, and then a high-flying dunk on an assist from Trey Burch-Manning that put USD ahead 75-49 with eight minutes to go.
The Coyotes finished 32 of 66 from the field (.485) which included a 10 of 18 performance from downtown. Burch-Manning had 11 rebounds, five offensive, to go with six points. Carlton Hurst had a pair of dunks as part of his 7-point, 6-rebound effort. True freshmen Triston Simpson and Tyler Peterson scored seven points apiece off South Dakota's bench. Mooney was credited with seven steals, the most by a Coyote in 13 years.
Omaha's all-Summit League guard Tra-Deon Hollins had five points, four assists and five turnovers. Preseason all-Summit pick Tre-Shawn Thurman had nine points on 3 of 9 shooting. Marcus Tyus, who has a 37- and a 33-point performance to his credit this year, had nine points on seven free throws and one field goal in 12 attempts.
New Faces, Great Places
South Dakota State's hiring of first-year head coach
T.J. Otzelberger was a nod to the state's motto, "Great Faces, Great Places." The new face of the program, announced April 14, 2016, is in his first-ever heading coaching role, but has been groomed for the position over several assistant stops, working with Lorenzo Romar (Washington), Fred Hoiberg (Iowa State), Greg McDermott (Iowa State) and Steve Prohm (Iowa State). Alongside Otzelberger, new members of the coaching staff include
Ben Walker, a Creighton hall of fame member who last coached at Jackson State,
Eric Henderson, a former Wayne State (Neb.) standout who spent last season with SDSU's rival, North Dakota State, and
Tyler Glidden, the director of operations who has worked at Creighton and Iowa State.
Rob Klinkefus was the lone holdover from former head coach Scott Nagy's staff, and enters his 11th season at SDSU.
20-Win Seasons
Reaching the 20-win mark has become a standard at South Dakota State University over the previous five seasons, as the Jackrabbits have done in four times in that span and 23 times in the program's history.Â
2015-16 Season Review
The 2015-16 Jackrabbit Men's Basketball season featured several highlights throughout the campaign, including a trip to the NCAA Tournament, a conference tournament title and earning a share of The Summit League's regular season championship. The Jackrabbits earned the No. 12 seed in last year's West Region, narrowly missing an upset over fifth-seeded Maryland in the first round, falling 79-74. Prior to that, SDSU earned the nickname "Cardiac Jacks" with a run through the conference tournament, pulling off three-point quarterfinal and one-point semifinal wins before earning the automatic bid with a 67-59 win over NDSU in the final.
Mike Daum was named the tournament MVP and
Deondre Parks was a member of the All-Tournament team. For the regular season, SDSU posted its second consecutive undefeated home record while three players garnered All-Conference honors in addition to other national awards.
Mike Daum was named the Summit League Freshman and Sixth Man of the Year in addition to earning spots on the All-Conference First Team and the All-Newcomer Team.
George Marshall was an All-Conference First Team selection and
Deondre Parks claimed an honorable mention nod. On the national level, Marshall and Parks earned NABC Division I All-District 12 honors with First and Second Team nods, respectively, and Daum was named a Kyle Macy All-American. After the season, longtime head coach Scott Nagy resigned after completing his 21st season at the helm.
