MACOMB, Ill. – South Dakota State bounced back in a big way from its Thursday night loss at Fort Wayne, and avoided losing back-to-back games for the first time this season with a wire-to-wire 87-67 win at Western Illinois on Saturday afternoon.
The Jackrabbits improve to 21-7 overall and to 10-4 in Summit League play, while the Fighting Leathernecks fall to 9-16 overall, and to 2-12 in the league.
Ian Theisen scored the first five points of the game, then SDSU added spurts of 5-0 and 7-0 before breaking the game open with an 11-0 run later in the half to give the Jacks a 32-13 lead with under nine minutes to play in the opening stanza.
Western cut the lead to 13 points with a quick 6-0 run, but SDSU came back with an 8-0 run later in the half to take its largest lead of the half at 47-25 before taking a 47-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Neither team made any kind of run in the second half, which became a battle at the free throw line, as SDSU made a season-high 33 free throws in the game in a season-high tying 37 attempts. Western also took its shots at the line in going 16 for 26 in the game.
Nine different Jackrabbits scored in the game, led by Daum and his 18 points on 5 of 6 shooting overall and a perfect 8 for 8 day at the foul line. Deondre Parks added 17 points and 7 rebounds, while George Marshall finished with 13 points and a game-high 8 rebounds, which ties a career-high. SDSU also got nine points from Theisen and from Tevin King.
Garret Covington led all players in the game with 23 points, with Mike Miklusak adding 12 off the bench in the loss.
The road schedule complete, the Jackrabbits close the regular season with two straight home games, starting with North Dakota State on Thursday at 7 p.m., followed by the Lamb Bonanza/Senior Night on Saturday against Oral Roberts at 4:30 p.m.
NOTES: SDSU leads the all-time series 20-3, with wins in each of the last 17 meetings and a 6-3 advantage inside Western Hall ... teams played in front of a crowd of 1,166 at Western Hall ...
