Lions Outlast Jacks at UCA Invite

CONWAY, Ark. – South Dakota State freshman Ali Herdliska went 3 for 3 with two doubles, a triple, a walk and two runs scored, while Lauren Chirnside smacked her team-high third home run of the season, but the Jackrabbits stranded eight runners on base in a 9-6 loss to Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday at the UCA Invitational.
The loss drops the Jacks to 2-11 on the season, while the Lions improve to 5-8.
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Christian McKone led off with a bunt single down the third base line, and then scored on a muffed throw. Chirnside put the Jacks ahead two batters later with her homer of the centerfield fence. Herdliska followed with a double, and then scored to make it 3-1 Jacks on an Abbey Murphy single in the next at bat.
Still 3-1 Jacks in the top of the third, the Lions plated six runs on three hits and one error to take a 7-3 lead heading into the bottom of the third, where the Jacks got an unearned run to cut the lead to 7-4.
The Jacks added unearned runs in the fourth and fifth innings to cut the lead to 7-6, but the Lions tacked on two more in the top of the sixth to secure the win.
SDSU can get back in the win column on Saturday at 6 p.m., when the take on the host Bears.
