"I mean 63-3 for two of those guys, and the other three haven't lost a game here," head coach Scott Nagy said about his team's record at Frost Arena with this senior class. "And we've shared a regular season title in three of the last four years and got second the other year. It's because we have good players, and those guys are obviously a big part of that."
On top of the impressive win total at home, which includes wins in each of the last 29 games, SDSU won at least 20 games in four of the last five seasons, and competed in a postseason tournament in each of the last four year, with a fifth straight possible this season.
SDSU finishes the regular season with a 23-7 overall record and a 12-4 mark in league play, which gives the Jackrabbits a No. 2 seed at next week's Summit League Championships. ORU falls to 14-16 overall, and to 6-10 in the league, which puts the Golden Eagles at either a No. 7 or No. 8 seed at the tournament.
The Jackrabbits score the first four points of the game, and even though they didn't pull away quickly, they did gradually increase the lead to as many as 12 points at 29-17 with just over seven minutes left in the first half.
ORU would trim that down to seven points a few minutes later, but the Jacks got the ball back with under five seconds left in the half, and got a Deondre Parks layup just before the buzzer sounded to push the lead back to double figures at 41-31 at halftime.
Just like in the first half, SDSU scored the first four points of the second half, which gave the Jacks their largest lead of the game to that point at 45-31 less than two minutes into the half, only to see the Golden Eagles fight back and cut the lead to six midway through the half.
The Jacks fired back, and a two-handed slam from Mike Daum with 8:38 left got the lead back to 10 points at 58-48, got the crowd on its feet and drew a timeout from the ORU bench.
That lead would grow to as many as 14 points, only to see the Golden eagles come back with an 11-2 run to cut the lead to 64-59 with just over three minutes left, but they could get no closer, as SDSU pushed the lead back to double figures and never looked back.
Daum led four Jackrabbits in double figures with 20 points, and tied for game-high honors with 6 rebounds. Reed Tellinghuisen also grabbed 6 boards to go with his 15 points, while George Marshall added 13 points and Keaton Moffitt 10 points in the win.
Obi Emegano scored a game-high 22 points, with Brandon Conley adding 15 points for ORU off the bench in the loss.
SDSU returns to action on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals of The Summit League Championships in the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center against either Oral Roberts or South Dakota.
